And R0 refers to the average number of people infected per case, regardless of mode of transmission and is a valid factor to use as a comparison.

I know what it is. Do you think that maybe the cultural practices and low level of health care in the region have something to do with the rate of transmission in west Africa? Do you think a similar rate is to be expected where there is a high level of health care and we don't routinely have close contact with our dead?

Here's what the reference (Legrand et al., 2007) says. You might want to read it.

For the 1995 DRC epidemic, the community component of R0 accounted for 0·5 (95% CI 0·4–1·9), the hospitalization component for 0·4 (95% CI 0·0–2·2) and the burial component for 1·8 (95% CI 0·0–2·3).

For each epidemic, we quantified transmission in different settings (illness in the community, hospitalization, and traditional burial) and simulated various epidemic scenarios to explore the impact of control interventions on a potential epidemic. A key parameter was the rapid institution of control measures. For both epidemic profiles identified, increasing hospitalization rate reduced the predicted epidemic size.

Do you really think that ebola is as easily transmissible as the flu?

I will say that it appears that Dallas and Akron seem to have gotten lucky, now we just watch with New York.
Luck doesn't have much to do with it.

Since we're way way beyond the 21 day incubation period for cases stemming from Duncan this really isn't a concern. a reply to: texasgirl

Because they've been isolating the boyfriends of the nurses, too, it was a question that has always bugged me. Someone else answered it for me.

There have been no tertiary cases stemming from the secondary cases. Dallas can be considered a closed book. The boyfriend's are clear, the people in Ohio are clear, the people on the cruise ship are clear.......etc. etc. etc.
No secondary cases from Craig Spencer in NY either.

Can't close the book on Dallas yet. There are still people in quarantine until November 10.

I clearly said in my op that my point was that there was no reason to expect a pandemic because it had hardly spread. You also seem to think that I am from the US which is wrong too.

Not only did me and mines not get it, basically EVERYBODY didn't get it outside of Africa, except 5 confirmed cases.

In addition all those medical staff have been working with Ebola infected patients for over a year (their exposure is based on time working with patients NOT number of infected people). Those staff have been coming and going home for over a year. They have been having sex with partners (hint to the poster a couple of pages back!). They have gone shopping when back home. They have travelled on planes and traversed through busy hubs like Chicago, Heathrow, Skipol. There will be doom porn ATS'ers who have passed them in the street.....breathing in the same air!!

And no pandemic !!

Seems very strange, unless, oh my god, shock horror, this can't possibly be true but maybe, just maybe. The Ebola medical experts know more than ATS couch potatoes.....end of the world revelation that !

To be fair, I find a lot of people that fly the libertarian flag are really confused republicans, or republicans in disguise

That's good to know. I still haven't heard anything on the boyfriends, though. And they were close contacts. I'll rest easy when I hear about them.

But thanks for the link.

I wonder If some actually secretly want something bad to happen.

Of course some people want bad things to happen to everyone, that's what makes them feel better!

But we have to engage fear and survival tactics, which is why we as a species respond to these (potentially threatening) situations with such vigour. We send DWB and military personnel, and if that isn't enough then it's time for the Neutron bomb...

I fact here is a question I pose to people in this thread and anyone else..

If a viral outbreak got very very bad.. Do you think governments around the globe would act by Nuking hazardous areas or the threat zone?

Replies please

I would think that the boyfriend's were in the group being monitored. Anyone who had contact with the two nurses including anyone in Ohio on the plane or even in the dress shop. They are all out of quarantine now and no one got sick. Dr. Spencer in NY is the only case in the US as of this moment and he is on the mend. So far no health care workers who attended him have gotten sick. I think they did a much better job with their protective gear.
