Knowing how John Cleese worked,it was probably not part of the script (a lot of Python wasn't) and was all ad libbed.It didn't mean anything in particular but had more comic impact as it wasn't really an insult,but a bad attempt at one.

My guess would be that it's an insult referring to his father as a drunk. Elderberries are used to make a very sweet wine. Was popular with peasants in medieval times.
