Those are the ChemCam calibration targets:





From this page:


The onboard rover calibration targets for LIBS consist of natural and synthetic volcanic glasses (Fabré et al., 2009, 2010) and ceramics consisting of mixtures of smectite and kaolinite with anhydrite and basalt to simulate Martian sedimentary samples (Vaniman et al., 2009). Also included is a graphite disk for carbon identification and a titanium plate for general use.


The dots are from the laser firing at the calibration targets.

Back to the "streaks," I found all the pictures taken after sample delivery to CheMin, at well as one from early on as part of the rover checkout. For reference, here they are: Sol 14, Sol 71, Sol 94, Sol 195, Sol 282, Sol 623, and Sol 765 (if I missed any, please let me know).

Now, here's my case for the streaks being made by larger grains moving across the dusty surface (due to vibration):

In all the image pairs, you can see some movement of material between the first and second pictures.

Because of the dust buildup in the later images, you can track some of the larger grains across Sols 623 and 765:

When seeing the effort you put into that post, I simply felt the desire to say "Thank you!" ...

I've been following this interesting topic since it was first posted and I'm really amazed by how dedicated some fellow ATS'ers are when it comes to analyzing observations such as those discussed in this thread.

excellent detective work nataylor, and certainly some gifs to be proud of for sure

ill get back on the theory ,, im still struggling to comprehend irregular shaped particles being jiggered slowly by the centrifuge and there not being some more evident backfill on the rovers surface, or more than we're seeing

but thanks for adding some great animations and new pictures to ponder over

so,. paradigm shifting ? of what we know of Mars's inhospitable environment to the sustainability of liquid water on its surface, does this suggest that for at least seven minuets we had liquid water on curiosity? do the long trails suggest an even longer period

is this even water? bugs? or something less exotic?
