Thing is The simpsons are very much for the older people and not for kids. Simpsons have crude humor like Family Guy. Child abuse, alcohol use, violence, and such is not for kids. Homer physically abuses Bart when he gets annoyed with him. This is not for kids eyes. I do agree with you that Family Guy is much more crude then Simpsons.
Also, the simpson movie drew Bart penis too.

Wow, people today would never be able to handle Fritz The Cat from 45 years ago. But people were freer back then.
We have devolved as a society.

There was a time when all people considered decent...those who were considered respectable and reasonable adults, would not want to steal the innocence of childhood away from our young just for the sake of adults enjoying entertainment, and thus we had protective laws about what was shown and when.
All anyone cares about now is themselves and their right to have fun and enjoy uncensored everything.

There was never a time when all people were considered decent....people back then just kept things in the dark. If you don't want your kids watching it then tell them they can't watch it! I don't even watch t.v. because it is such trash with the exception of some good movies and maybe 2 tv series that I have encountered.
Imagine a world where nothing offends anyone? How cool would that be. Or we can just keep suppressing reality as much as possible and tell everyone they are a special snowflake....well snowflakes melt.
