n a move to roll back the limited political and social liberalization experiment introduced by Iran's reformist President Hassan Rouhani, the country's hardline conservative judiciary has given the government one month to block WhatsApp and other social media and messaging services.

Chief prosecutor Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei accused Communications Minister Mahmoud Vaezi of failing comply with earlier directives to cut off social networking sites and apps "with immoral and criminal content."

"Despite a three month grace period to allow you and your colleagues enough time, no effective action has been taken to filter out immoral and un-Islamic offenses," said Mohseni-Ejei, who was appointed first deputy judiciary chief last month.

Social media blocked until complete censorship in the form of "smart filtering is introduced.

The final warning, which was broadcast by Iranian media on Saturday, is a response to what Mohseni-Ejei says is a failure by Communications Minister Vaezi, who promised in May to introduce what he called "smart filtering" to restrict "obscene" material from being viewed or shared.

Rouhani, who has been in office for one year, has said that he views the internet "an opportunity, not a threat."

Here comes Iran's propaganda machine.

Somewhat hilariously, an Iranian judge summoned Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to appear in court in May over complaints that Facebook-owned apps Instagram and WhatsApp violate privacy.

Good luck with that.

Like we are any different. Every single R movie is edited for language and content before airing here. Every single Youtube is pixelated, clipped and banned, even.

Every phone call and email recorded, every film censored, at the airport every body and bit of luggage probed, every traffic stop a fugitive hunt, every arrest a violation of civil rights due to long court waits, hold without bail or charge, etc. Nowadays sentences and fines are astronomical.

Right to privacy, and freedom of protest and redress of grievances, whats that? Oh, its in the constitution.

I disagree, we are no where near the level of Iran. R rated movies are censored? Really, come on now.

We have our own gov't issues in the US, well everywhere really, but we are not even close to Iran.

While I agree the USA has become a police state and continues to get worse the USA is no where near as bad as Iran.

Will the USA get to that level? I'm sure TPTB would like that.

lol, there seems to continually be people who want to say the USA is repressive and use things like the once a week or so police abuse story of the week or the fact that for whatever reason the cops have gotten some serious hardware as the excuse...

In all reality, the US is incredibly loose on most issues. Loose IMHO to a degree where people believe the word "Freedom" means "Freedom to be a disgusting reject of a person" very often.... and the words "I'll do what I want" via the Jerry Springer show comes to mind...

The truth... we have corruption, like any govt will eventually over time accumulate, 99% of any lack of freedom or injustice in the states is nothing more than people trying to make money off you and it builds up like dirt in any system over time. I remember guys coming in from Russia supposedly communist after the wall fell with Millions and millions of dollars, corruption, that's the enemy in any system always, the system itself however starts out sane it just needs to be "cleaned" periodically....

Your statement should have been next time the USA hangs a gay man for raping a 13 year old boy let you know. Iran didn't hang those guys just for being gay.

What nation has Hamas invaded? You can't invade your own occupied land.

You want to compare what Hamas is doing to Americas Military Industrial Complex.

Factories for war, world wide bases, nuclear missiles, aircraft carriers, mechanized armies, yah, sure.

Iran isn't stupid, you are right. Despite what the main stream and their minions would have us believe, they are peaceful. They aren;t attacking anybody.

They might though if we got out of the way. You notice theres no ISIS in Iran.
