Well technically the Prime Minister upon election does have to ask the queens permission to form a government... Hang on, dont diss me just yet.. i may need to check that fact, lol

Edit to add, okay i checked it, she does have to give her approval so to speak.

London, England (CNN) -- The days of discussions have ended, demands issued, concesssions made and a decision finally reached -- but even before they formed a government, the UK's political parties must wait for approval from one more person: The queen.

Yes, but it's just a formality. Brenda would never say 'No' as she can't really. People who say that she's a dictator really have no idea about the odd way in which this country works. Britain - baffling the world for century upon century!

Fair enough matey; however if its just a formality and mainly ceremonial stuff (as pointed out in previous post) then why do we need a queen as she clearly serves no purpose.

I cant speak for the OP obviously but for me its not a personal thing against the royals, it just makes practical sense; its a pure waste of money that could be spent better elsewhere.

Actually it also promotes privilege which surely cant be right.

I for one would rather have Queen Elizabeth II as my head of state than President Cameron.

I think Blair would fancy himself for that position!

Presidents and their entourage wouldn't be cost effective anyway, also how many tourists would flock to London to see the palace and guards?

I get the impression that if the royal family did have a say in the politics of this country the Middle East wars would never have had us in them and doing so we would not have become a target to extreme Muslims

Contrary to the inane blabbering of some, the role of the UK monarch is primarily the last resort to prevent e.g. dictatorship. Your listing of what the monarch does is ceremonial with the threat that he/she can refuse to allow a government to be formed, or a law to be passed.

It may be painful for the anti-monarchy brigade, but there is one person who is non-political that can say "no". Plus, I guess the military would be more inclined to follow the monarch, rather then a politician so if push came to shove the British approach seems a neat solution.

Edit to add that the armed forces, except the Royal Navy, swear allegiance to the monarch.

Regards

So educate yourself before trying tell lies.

Are you saying the dictator has no German relatives in her past?

Most U.S. Presidents have had British relatives and British gene pools.

Does that make them British ?

Actually if you take a close look most world leaders in the Western world are related. Why even Bush and Obama are related.

Hi,

I like you attitude. Star for you sir!

Would You think it odd if Hafiz said,
"I'm in Love with every Church,
and with every Mosque,
and with every Synagogue,
and with every Temple,
and any kind of Shrine,
because it is there that I hear ALL the different names of The One God...."

I don't have a problem with anyone that wants to think that way but according to my faith that would be considered "false worship" .... worshipping false gods and I would pray and hope that individual would listen to my objections as to why their way of thinking concerning religion might need an adjustment.

I am not made or upset how one thinks about religion.

There sure are a lot of violations on this thread including myself and I hope all read them before they disappeared including the thread of mine that disappeared.....

A further 217 days will see Elizabeth II match the length of Queen Victoria's reign. This will occur on 10 September, 2015. Therefore, it will be on 11 September, 2015 that Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest serving British monarch (if she lives without abdicating until that date).

The royal family costs each tax payer about 70pence a year...
Secondly she would still have been queen of Scotland independent or not...
They changed their German name before she was born...
& they changed the name because they didn't want to be associated with the German Royals who started World War 1...

So everything the haters of the royals are spouting is nonsensical!!!

Good day!!!

Of course she is. Who would willing give up what she has? She isn't even considerate enough to step down and let her son rule as the Netherlands have and Denmark......... what arrogance.

I would NEVER bow to her or any other royal wannabe.......... except one but he has not yet returned.

Why should she? She's still capable and able to do the 'job'. Charles, on the other hand, has made some rather questionable decisions. Perhaps she knows it's best to eventually pass Charles over in favor of William. At any rate, there is no reason for her to step down in favor of a younger royal.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

The queen of England is 88 years old.

EDIT LATER: She has a hard enough time walking upright! Now I am not going to look it up but just how many Kings and Queens have rulled at the age of 88 not 80 or 70 BUT 88 years old. Can someone enlighten me on this?

The Queen does have blood from the House of Alpins, so she is a cousin to Scottish Royalty, much better than the House of Stewards of the House of Hanover which had no relation to those people whatsoever. Although, I hate monarchy, so who is keeping account?

You can't just 'pass' someone over. He can abdicate, but this fiasco surely has gone on long enough. They should all be stripped of titles and most of their ill-gotten gains and made to live like everyone else.

I can't believe that our so-called civilized social constructs in this day and age still seem to sometimes require this sort of thing.

so much hate in this OP .. why?

the German queen thing has been done a million times , i know you hate you lost the referendum but its time to man up

I for one am proud that we stand together still and it may teach others a thing or to about what an evolving democracy looks like.. of course its not perfect but together we are stronger..

i have no love for the monarchy but your figures and statistics are outdated and debunked , i agree we shouldn't fund her, but they do bring a lot of money into the country via tourism etc.

Can you not just leave your "Religious Believes" out of any debate? Why would we want an American bowing to our Queen in the first place. I responded to you in another thread, one of the few you started today all about British Issues. In my opinion you started all these Scottish debates to collect Stars and Flags, when in fact you have just made a fool of yourself most of the time.

Do me a favour, I'll not respond to you and your drivel if you don't respond to mine. You make me cringe, there are only two people on ATS that make my blood boil and you are one of them. If I wanted to be preached at, i'd go to church, not come to ATS when some wannabe preaches to folk that don't want to hear it.

All your posts have been anglophobic, uneducated and filled with absolute nonsense, and yet when anyone asks you to prove what you have written, you leave the debate. You have had more posts removed today than I have ever seen on ATS and threads closed. Get the message will you.

Back on topic, What does it matter what the Queens heritage is? With the same logic you use, we could ascertain that the Red Indians in America are being governed by the Europeans invaders. Something about you does not ring right with me, you state you're Christian but surely your GOD does not have an issue with Germans as you do. I thought your god created everyone and as such you really should not have any issue who the British Queen is as "we are all gods children"

Don't respond to me as i'll only be rude and I'd rather debate with other like minded folk who are not shoving their religious or spiritual believes down my throat at every god damn opportunity.
