The map below contains more than 3,700 daycare, preschool and kindergarten facilities in L.A. County, and shows the relative risk of potential infection based on the proportion of students whose parents have chosen to deviate from the standard immunization requirements.

Here's the Hollywood elite practicing what they preach, failing to immunize their children. We all heard the conspiracies that immunizations are bad, well these eggheads really believed it and now all the kids are suffering as if they live in third world countries.

Whether it’s measles or pertussis, the local children statistically at the greatest risk for infection aren’t, as one might imagine, the least privileged — far from it. An examination by The Hollywood Reporter of immunization records submitted to the state by educational facilities suggests that wealthy Westside kids — particularly those attending exclusive, entertainment-industry-favored child care centers, preschools and kindergartens — are far more likely to get sick (and potentially infect their siblings and playmates) than other kids in L.A. The reason is at once painfully simple and utterly complex: More parents in this demographic are choosing not to vaccinate their children as medical experts advise. They express their noncompliance by submitting a form known as a personal belief exemption (PBE) instead of paperwork documenting a completed shot schedule.

What I really find funny about the whole thing is how they describe climate change deniers as ignoring the science, and then turn right around and take, in effect, the same attitude towards modern medicine that ignorant, backwards people take.

Doh! Let's blame the poor people! After all, just cause our kids are not vaccinated is no reason for them to catch diseases.

Just out of curiosity, I would have to wonder what the incidence rate of autism is for these "eggheads". I object to the application of that term to those knuckleheads.

Maybe if nobody was vaccinated the virus would not even be amongst them. And please dont tell me they dont use live virus because there are many documented cases of it.

Personally I make decisions with my children's pediatrician. However we are a team and he rocks.

That comment made me cringe. The pediatrician aren't in charge, the parent it.

That being said, this particular article didn't bring up that these same groups being discussed turning down vaccines are the one affluent enough to travel places they should have the vaccines.

Depends on the vaccination and disease being vaccinated for.

Besides...what you are suggesting would result in those not vaccinated catching the virus, but those vaccinated not.

Perhaps, also, you might consider how long it has been since polio was running around. Or Smallpox... The vaccinations were given for years after the diseases were practically wiped out. I guess you could say that I do not see much in the way of evidence from a practical evidence based real world observation.

What a stupid article!!!! There are NO stats indicating how many vaccinated vs. unvaccinated kids are getting pertussis. The ONLY actual stat in the article states supposedly half of all measles cases are among non vaccinated. Amanda Peets kid actually got the 2 out of 3 shots and STILL got the disease. The reason so many kids are getting the diseas is because their bodies can't clear the adenylate cyclase toxin released by the pertussis bacteria. None of these kids have any natural immunity to this particular toxin because its not in the vaccine!!!!! It is THE toxin that causes the characteristic whoop by attaching to the cilia in the lungs!!!! So even if a fully vaccinated child is exposed to a wild strain of whooping cough they have no antibodies and no protection. There is evidence that a vaccinated child has an even harder time clearing it than a non vaccinated child. Doctors don't understand this and parents in both side of the vaccine debate are clueless from a scientific perspective as well. Ask any doctor to name the toxins or antigens used in the Pertussis vaccine and most have no clue. Not one doctor I know has even heard of adenylate cyclase toxin.

So you didn't read the other link which is a summation of peer reviewed studies.

How do explain the CBS news story above then? Seems to me it proves just the opposite: The children who received the measles vaccine mostly got sick or died.

The article doesn't say that at all!!!! It says the RISK is skyrocketing in areas where there are non vaccinated kids. In actuality overall pertussis outbreaks happen overwhelmingly among vaccinated kids. This was proven in 2010 in when there was another outbreak!!!! San Rafael Kaiser Permanente had 256 cases and something like 8% of the cases were among non vaccinated children. A doctor is on record saying that. The question to ask in CA is why there is such a high incidence of whooping cough among vaccinated kids PERIOD???? If the kids have atleast one of the shots they should have high immunity but they don't. There are kids who are fully vaccinated in clusters getting whooping cough. If people had any idea how the whooping cough vaccine worked they'd understand. See my above post and maybe you will as well. Kids are ONLY immune to the antigens they put in the vaccine. For pertussis it is agglutinins, pertactin, pertussis toxin. There are other toxins released by the bacteria that cause disease and symptoms AND there is parapertussis which is an entirely different strain. That's why when people were getting exposed to the whole cell pertussis they'd pass it onto their offspring and it's the same reason why the whole cell pertussis vaccine worked so well but was CAUSING so much disease as well. Jesus some of you know believe in conspiracy and are supposed to deny ignorance but when it comes to vaccines it seems they are do no wrong saviors of mankind! WRONG!

San Rafael - An investigation by California doctors has revealed that the state's latest outbreak of whooping cough centered around children who had already received the whooping cough vaccine, Reuters reports. The study, led by infectious disease specialist Dr. David Witt, was initiated after an unusually large number of whooping cough cases were admitted to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Rafael, California in 2010. After examining the records of juvenile whooping cough patients over an 8-month period, the doctors discovered that 81 percent of patients had received the full series of whooping cough shots, and 11 percent had received only some of the shots. The remaining 8 percent had not received any immunizations for whooping cough. "What was very surprising was the majority of cases were in fully vaccinated children," Witt said. "That's what started catching our attention." After further analysis, Witt and his team surmised that the effectiveness of the vaccine wears off after several years, creating the need for additional inoculations."

Whooping Cough is rarely fatal.

During 2012, 48,277 cases of pertussis were reported to CDC, including 20 pertussis-related deaths. This was the most reported cases since 1955. The majority of deaths occurred among infants younger than 3 months of age. The incidence rate of pertussis among infants exceeded that of all other age groups. The second highest rates of disease were observed in children 7 through 10 years old. Rates increased in adolescents 13 and 14 years of age.

So that would work out to .04% of cases ended in death.

I've been watching this for quite a while - because I knew that Pertussis was usually a mild disease.

And on television, the pharma companies are targeting poor ESL family's.

Life isn't a sure thing. Many of these deseases actually work to strengten the immune system.

I'm all for immuniation for Serious Diseases but not for simple ones. This is only tangentially a public health issue, education would serve better in that realm in any case, the issue is one of Profit - big business profit.

This is incredibly disingenuous as it completely ignores the changing and expanding definitions of autism and other disorders over the decades.

Even if it were accurate, there's as much correlation between the rise of computer games and autism as there is between vaccines and autism. Neither are evidence of any causal effect because every time it is studied, no link is found.

Trust the ant-vaxxers to rely on ignorant scaremongering and distortion of data to try and win the credulous over.

The facts are right there in the story, your passionate defense of the anti vaccinate hysteria fails to produce anything as real as these journalists pieced together. Your own citation has the doctors recommending additional inoculations.
There is no getting around the fact that cases have skyrocketed only in schools that have parents who reject the innoculations for their children. This is the result of all these false scare tactics that the rich affluent have fallen for.

Does a disease HAVE to be fatal to be a problem?

Diseases are rarely fatal these days because of the treatment available.
It doesn't mean that the child suffering from them won't spend a prolonged time in a PICU on artificial ventilation or suffer chronic breathing problems, neurological problems etc etc does it?

Have you ever seen a neonate becoming blue because they can't breath due to whooping cough?
Have you?
I have.
Too many times.

But it's not usually fatal so that's alright...
