I don't think any sane state would launch a nuclear weapon, effectively due to theory of MAD. That said, if any state acquires the ability to render another's arsenal useless, there may be war waged with WMDs.

In terms of a state launching a nuke, i would hedge my bets on North Korea. While they have usually been all talk and no action, it would be unwise to underestimate them. Additionally, if their regime falls, they might as well go out guns blazing, if you know what i mean. I would expect them to launch their nukes before any collapse, just because. They are technically still at war...

As for terrorists launching a nuke, that would prove troublesome. Nukes are said to be sold on the black market. Vice actually interviewed a dealer who said one passed through him. Apparently there are many out there...the ones which were apparently deactivated. If a terrorist organisation were to get their hands on one, they would have to be able to provide proper maintenance as well as acquire the means of deploying it. That would effectively rule out the majority of organisations. ISIS has $2 billion though, so i guess they could do something like that...maybe.

No country will drop the first nuke. It will be from a rogue group or agency that managed to get their hands on one or several. My reckoning is Israel will be the first target.

Many people believe in MAD. They believe in nuclear winter. But ... they don't know.

Nuclear war is quite survivable. The worst of it will be the destruction of the electrical grid. Don't know how many of you would want to survive that, or the second and third order effects of that, but I'm right.

The USA dropped the first nuke when it didn't need to, which perpetuated the Cold War.

The Cold War wasn't profitable enough, which led to US destabilization of the Middle East.

The same policies were utilized to cause destabilization on Russia's Doorstep.

Russia has responded with defiance. Little more than defiance.

My money is on the USA for dropping the next nuke, regardless of who takes the blame...

We were evil enough to do it before, we are still evil enough to do it now. Little has changed. The delusion of our superiority is just bigger.

Yep. If it's not some hollywood style rogue group who somehow managed to develop a nuke, it'll be the nation with the fastest weapon. As far as i know, right now only China, Russia, and the US have hypersonic weapon programs.

Russia. They already said if the US attacks their forces with our advanced conventional ability, they would respond with nukes. Putin is ex head of the KGB, a hard core man if there ever was one. They have a huge new complex for the leaders to sustain a nuclear war and winter. It is in the Yamantau Mountain Complex.

Russia has been carrying out nuclear drills and right now they have no respect of fear of Obama. He could blunder us into a nuclear war. It would have to be a strike on Russian forces, probably in Russian territory. But, they could use tactical (theater) nukes initally and see what happens.

Israel will use them if they think they are going to lose the country. Obama wants to rid the US of all nukes leaving us vulnerable to attack from China or Russia.

And remember there are 84 nuclear suitcase bombs still missing from Russia when they recalled them after the Soviet collapse. So, wherever they are if a terrorist gets a hold of one or more, that would be the surprise detonation.

What if the UK or United States became over run with Ebola cases...Do you think Russia would nuke the Ebola infected countries in an attempt to save them selves from the spreading plague...

Autumn, that's a highly ignorant and dangerous opinion.

If this really is Ebola Zaire, which, if you do the research it doesn't appear to be, then it's certainly not behaving within expected parameters. So all bets are off....

Read a report recently saying 30% chance of Ebola hitting UK shores by end of this month. It's clearly airborne now, as the usual methods of protecting oneself are not working, as shown by the high levels of medical professionals contracting the disease.

I would be concerned about this outbreak. Currently quite low levels of contraction, but infection rate is exponential, and my fears are in no way lessened by WHO holding back the numbers (which are already way lower than reality I expect, as it only shows the numbers of positively tested patients. In Liberia, bodies are lining up on the streets in parts).

USA. They have already used an aton bomb twice, and so far is the onliest country to have done so, and judging by all the war mongerd over there, i wouldnt be surprised if they use it again.

and I think US will start using mini nukes first

after that, other countries will use theirs
but at that point you have nothing to worry about

unless you plan to survive it

I don't know who will let off the first nuke since the US did in the 40's, but I would make a bet the nuke will come from Pakistan. They don't have sufficient security regarding nukes, and they harbor radicals. I don't know if it will be stolen or sold, but it will likely be a radical group that acquired the nuke from pakistan. I have said this a million times I know, but that is my opinion.

I could also see North Korea selling one, but Pakistan is my bet.
