Oh how pathetic. Glad we've come a little way since then. I'm just thinking of how language evolves though. 'Fell off his horse in the war' was
perhaps a diagnosis but it was an expression that probably found its way into common parlance is my guess. My grandmother used to use the expression
"he fell off his horse" instead of gesticulating by drawing an imaginary circle around her ear. By the time it got passed down to me, one
expression I used is "that guy fell out of his tree."
And then there's the theme music from Twilight Zone that my kids hum.
How sad for the people of that time though.
