Im from the generation where everyone has a facebook...lets just call it the "selfie" generation I started with FB when it came out thinking alright this is neat, since I have family over seas and at the time phone calls were a bit pricey I found it a great way to connect....but then the constant posting of selfies, music lyrics, what they were eating, how they were feeling, fighting, and links and post to stuff I had no interest in ect. Just basically the total bombardment of constantly seeing "behind the curtain" of certain people I did not want to know these things about. So I deleted it.
But the reason I now hate the site so much is purely based off the psychological damage it is causing our society. I was always advised growing up that its not a good thing to constantly wear your heart on your sleeve for everyone! That is exactly what FB promotes! Let alone the FB "stalking" where you can really creep on people, with out them even knowing. I constantly get asked to "just find me on FB". And when I reply sorry I don't have one I get the oddest looks as if I'm bringing up a highly touchy subject. I'm sad to say that its making this generation very vain, hot headed and dumb. Everyone is a warrior behind their keyboard. While on the other side people are becoming more self conscious, insecure, neurotic and even suicidal. The idea is good but the lack of understanding on how to use this "tool" as good is completely lost on the younger users. (obviously not all, but most)

It's all about not being able to hide behind nick names anymore. Everything you say, share and like, you will be responsible for and it will be linked back to you. Fakebook is just a beta version of what is coming. In the near future, everyone will have an internet id number too. This is all part of the masters of puppets plan.

Think about all the trollish comments all over the Internet. A lot of the horrible things that these people thumb up, and a lot of the despicable things that they say, they would not say if their real names were showing. Silencing those degenerates is about the only good thing that could come out of this. ~$heopleNation

Is THIS what we want? Our entire social discussion controlled by Facebook and other corporate media? Now they even attack independent media as 'non-credentialed' so that citizens cannot hold a position counter to the corporate, agenda driven Government media and be heard.

Does anyone else see Facebook taking over site after site? Even sports sites are controlled. I am so angry I could write a strongly worded letter, but no one will ever see it because Facebook will censor anything non-approved for public consumption.

HOWEVER

Online interaction and discussion of opinion is nearly pointless. Get out and talk to real people, face to face.

The only place I spend any time with online discussion anymore is ATS and with direct family and friends on facebook.

Your life is too valuable to bother wasting precious minutes in comments sections.

Honestly.... What the hell does it matter what someone says on some ESPN topic online?? IT DOESNT.

We need to get out and SOCIALIZE with people in the real world.

Our whole humanity is coming apart right now and a large part is this whole (anti)SOCIAL media nonsense.

The web may have brought the world together in a smaller place, but it's also driven individuals APART, and more into isolation than anything in history.

S&F for the title alone! I loathe FB. Have an account, ONLY to stay in touch with distant family that literally won't any other way, but VERY rarely do I even log on. I will NOT, EVER, post a comment on some other site through FB. I cannot fathom why so many websites do that; make it so you have to use social media to post! One I used to use frequently did that, and I stopped commenting there, and complained. Later, they added on Disqus, which at least allows an anonymous account, and that I will use.

These days, FB is the eyes and ears of Big Brother. All the "social media" sites seem to be, and you can't get away from the stupid little symbols anywhere. Even fast food packaging has them! Yeah, cause the world needs to know someone got a burger someplace! And, yes, they censor anything and everything that isn't "acceptable" speech.

The zombies are already here, and they live on FB.

I use Facebook, but only for my business. You have to. So...I guess I'm part of the problem.

I finally tried facepalm a couple of months ago after some encouragement from friends. I used a fake name though because I don't trust the site (now I see that my suspicions were justified). I tried it for a couple of weeks trying to figure out what all the fuss was about.

All I noticed was people making idiotic and useless posts about what they had for lunch, what mood they were in, when they took their last dump etc. There's also the obligatory selfie in front of a dirty bathroom mirror with their shirt off or making a ridiculous pouty face ie impersonation of a goldfish.

It seems to be the hangout for the insecure and self absorbed. The fact that this site is so popular is disturbing.

Back in the 80's if you told everyone, someday people will just WILLINGLY give up all their personal information they would tell you that you where wearing a tin foil hat, and it was utter nonsense. NO one would do that!

I grew up in a different time and age.

I get it.
And twitter, ugh, they do not ask for such personal information, and I never went on Twitter until the whole out break in Ferguson, to help get sources and confirm on the ground facts.

I refuse to have one. I don't need them. I have my flip dumb phone, and it works just fine for what I need it to do.

I am finally at that age now, where I look at things today going on. And shake my head. Things where different when I was growing up. We did not have cell phones, we had lan lines. That those of us who knew better, did NOT use lan lines for some things either. Face to face interaction has been lost in the sea of the internet.

Anyway, great thread! S&F. Facebook sucks. and is not what it seems.

I've heard about kids spending 1k-5k for some clicky games on Facebook! WTF! Video games use to cost about 30-60$ and you owned the game. Now all these click pay to win games.
Those are not video games.. Same as Facebook Wolf in sheep's clothing!!! Crazy crazy crazy.

Been thinking about deleting my FB account for a long time now. I only use it to keep in contact with distant family and friends, but really I just see a lot of "fake-ness" going on. 98% of my FB "friends" are not my friends, not in the true sense. I haven't talked to them on a phone or in person in over 15 years. Why are they wishing me a Happy Birthday? I was gonna change my birthday so it comes around like 3 or 4 times a year and see if anyone other than my family notices, I would bet not.

This is aside from all the info that is being gathered through FB on me and my "friends".

I think this thread is the final push I needed to delete that account.

Totally agree. They pretty much think they are the internet now.

Face book has destroyed online socialising for me. Myspace had the perfect model where you could search for people and befriend them. Send more than 5 friend requests out and you get blocked for spam

Google controls what we see. I have proof that they sensor sites that dont fir their moral criteria. You can test it by search for a paragraph of text. Most sites a paragraph will show up. I have several large sites and they are all top notch quality and they wont show up for paragraph searches, they are BLOCKED.

Amazon has destroyed small business. I own several online shops, just for fun, one selling books and I sell about, currently, none a year. Search for a book and Amazon comes up regardless of whether they have it in stock.

As such, i cant decide which service is the most eveil, but between them they make up the axis of evil, in my opinion.

My kid's school has decided that sport schedules and upcoming events are ONLY posted on FB and if we don't have an account....well then too bad on us
Tried to contact media over this and am considering going to the school board over this FB issue.

My kid is involved in several service organizations and sports that posted summer schedules and fall activities on FB only.

Come to find out the school's website is ran by one person and even the school closure schedule isn't available at his HS.

THIS IS BDUNG!!

The soccer coach was SUPPOSED to EMAIL the summer schedule for practice and he never got that because it was on FB.

A service org that he is involved in did the same.....listed fundraisers that he was supposed to attend but din't know about because it was on FB.

He got downgraded because he didn't attend.

I am seriously considering legal action over this because of what he has missed and gotten 'in trouble for' over this.

My kid should NOT be penalized because he doesn't have a FB account, but yet he has and is.

Who can I go to about this?

I am with you and yes, I refuse to sighn up for FB, even though its near mandatory in my kids school.

I want to file suit........not for monetary but to get OUR district to know and understand that this id discriminatory and when it comes to scholarships....well, I guess we are out for not having FB and that is WRONG. Last I checked, its a public high school with EQUAL access and right now we don't have it and I know we are not alone. Had 12 kids come to my house last year to do projects that HAD to be done and turned in on the puter.

What about the kids who don't have computers....we went through this last year computer only assignments and we had the only computer.

Its BS and i need to figure how how to file an official complaint against the school.

Yep I'm getting sick of it too, and I'm not the only one in the family. There are even webshops in our country where you need to log in with your Facebook in order to be able to buy special/on-sale products or to make use of a coupon code.

Like for example, there is this drugstore chain called 'Kruidvat' in the Netherlands and it's probably the most popular drugstore out here. Anyway, 1.5 year ago one of my elder family members received a 'customers-card' from the drugstore which he/she can use to get discounts on products, allowing him/her to buy special store-brand products and to make ordering easier and what else not. She 'only' had to activate the card on their company's website. Turns out she had to register using her FB acc which she didn't even have, and therefore couldn't use the customers-card.

Facebook is becoming way too mingled within people's everyday-life to be honest. Nice for private use, but in my opinion it becomes nasty when businesses also start to force you to register at them using Facebook.

Facebook and other social websites are the "In" thing right now for the young and the very sociable.
People go where the money is, the gossip, the this, the that
Not many people care abou the things outside their world
Hence the TV, social media
All they watch are celebrities and other brain washing stuff
So yea Facebook is everywhere because many people are making Facebook popular and almost everyone has one

Ya you have to pay to have your posts seen now unless all your fans are commenting and interacting. Try using groups they show up on more feeds than pages do.
