A few months ago I received a letter from Arbitron the TV ratings folks. In the letter was a fresh one dollar bill. The letter basically stated that
I'd been selected to give them information about which tv shows I liked watching. It stated that there would be a telephone interview after which
I'd receive another cash payment for my participation. I took their call about a week after I received their letter.
A short while later I received a thank you letter with another dollar in it. Whoopy right?
Last week I got another letter from Arbitron this one with a ten dollar bill in it along with a brochure about their function in the ratings business
. The accompanying letter said that I had been chosen to participate in their ratings procedures. They said they will send us a small device for each
member of the family. We must wear these devices during the day and evening and that depending on how much tv we watched would gain points that they
would pay us for. The minimum would be fifty dollars a month for each member. The maximum would be one hundred and fifty five dollars per month for
each member.
The device they say is about the size of a cell phone and it picks up a signal from the broadcast of tv or radio. It must be worn and is heat
sensitive so you can't just leave it on next to the tv. There is also another device which gets plugged into a socket and left alone. This they say
is to distinguish whether the signal being picked up is in our home or out of our home where it might not be within our control what we are watching
or listening to as in a store or someone else's home.
I told the lady on the phone that it sounded a bit big brotherish to which she indicated confusion. I said you know conspiracy stuff and laughed. She
said oh no we won't know where you are and it doesn't pick up conversations. She said that is illegal.
So is this my chance to participate in selecting what is shown on tv's or something more?
