"Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) says Congress can't afford a pay cut because its last salary increase occurred six years ago.

Terry, considered one of the Republican Party’s most vulnerable incumbents this cycle, rebuffed his Democratic challenger state Sen. Brad Ashford on Monday. Ashford wants to cut lawmakers' salary by 10 percent and, if elected, would voluntarily return that amount until he gets the cut passed.

"What he's not telling you is that Congress hasn't had a cost of living increase since 2008, when I led the charge for a freeze," Terry shot back, according to KMTV."

The rich get richer, the poor stay poor, and the gap continues to divide.

Stop voting these idiots, whether Democrat or Republican.

The only thing I've seen lately making a difference is traffic jams. The hell with voting. Organized nation wide traffic jams will make change.

They should paid by piecework. Pass legislation, get $10,000 and a cookie. Do nothing...get nothing.

so, the last time they got a raise (cost of living) was in 2008?
actually it was in january of 2009 they recieved a 2.8% raise, the last time minimum wage was raised was in 2009 also,so what are they complaining about?
cost of living hits the minimum wage worker the same as it hits the $174,000 a year congressman.

This should be a trick purported by the american people. Which ever congressman accepts the raise gets immediately fired. The american people need to be so much more strict on these clowns.

I'd go as far as calling them assclowns. What other job do you know of that you can do nothing, completely # on your coworkers, bitch, whine, and not get fired? I don't know of one outside of public office.

May I suggest the opposite?

We have WAY too many laws already on the books! Many of them to favor Multi national Corporations over the health and welfare of the people!

I would suggest that they get a raise based upon the amount of unconstitutional laws that are already on the books and base that raise on how many of these so called laws they eliminate!!

Let's start with the Federal Reserve Bank and Wall Street as far as creating laws that will help the average citizen....

It's kind of like being a cop, but you don't have to kill anyone for it.

It`s hard work carrying all those bags of kickbacks and bribes to the bank, they need some time off to enjoy their ill gotten gains.

With a $174,000 a year salary, plus bribes, kickbacks and other perks, if they are starting to feel the pinch in their bank accounts from inflation how do they think the average worker has been feeling?
if i remember correctly social security recipients didn`t recieve a cost of living increase for several years because the "government" said there was no increase in the cost of living.

Given these guys refuse to raise minimum wage, this is a slap in the face for American. Unpopular bills like this are generally passed when the masses are distracted. So this indeed is interesting timing, however I have not done enough research on this to give it a time stamp.

I think our elected officials serving in DC, deserve E-5 pay + BAH/BAS, not a penny more. That is the same pay as a Sergeant or Petty Officer 2nd Class serving in the military.

With all the kickbacks our Senators and Congressmen get, we could do away with paying these pigs. This wouldn't solve anything because it would prevent anyone outside lobby interest from surviving in Washington, not that it is any different now.

Here's a thought. Maybe this ridiculous crap is being spread to keep us from thinking about something else? The US going to do something in Ukraine? Israel/Gaza? The gov. is EXCELLENT at sleight of hand.

They may be experts at the sleight of hand, but not everyone falls for it.

While most fall for the sleight of hand, it makes those who see the tricks as outliers and not part of the herd.

Iv been saying in the UK circles and il say it here.

Politicians pay should be tied directly into the national average wage.

What ever the national average is they get.

If the countrys does well, they do well.

If they screw up and cause a economic downturn they suffer.

To top it off they have to pay a special politician tax, what ever the unemployment rate is, they then have to pay that % in tax.

Id also institute a war vote draft for politicians familiys. If a congressman votes for a war and they have a family member eligible for military service then that family member gets drafted

If their salary wasn't so high and their benefits were the same as average citizens, we wouldn't have politicians making a life career out of being a congressional rep.! Maybe we would than get average citizens running for offices that want to pass laws to help average citizens instead of the rich. They can then understand how the ordinary folk live.
