I think people look into this kind of stuff too deeply.

The Pale Blue Dot is a fairly big place really, so it's hardly surprising various local, national, regional and global events are occuring simultaenously.

I'd imagine you could pick pretty much any month in any year and find several big stories along these lines - even if some of the current crop are potentially unusually significant.

I'm still waiting for any news outlet to report on the Fukishima cleanup, or lack of cleanup....you know, multiple nuclear meltdowns should get a little follow-up press...oh right...the reactors were made by GE....move along...nothing to see here.
