And if you folks don't think lots of choppers suddenly sharing a tiny airspace with other flying things can be harrowing, come to FL. We have to put up with the news choppers, police choppers, tour choppers, private planes from Cessnas to Gulfstreams, and commercial flights out of TIA & the smaller area airports. I live in the vicinity of MacDill AFB, so military flights in this area, too. It's crowded up there. If something major were to go down in the Tampa area, you betcha I'd be applauding airspace restrictions in such a busy area.

If a little context may help, this was part of the update text run at the St Louis CBS affiliate.

“There had been a shot in the air sometime Sunday evening, there had also been a helicopter flying over,” she said. “It doesn’t mean it was shooting at the helicopter but there was a shot into the air, so they put this temporary flying order in place.”

The airport director said there have been no reports of any shots fired at aircraft and the move is strictly a precaution. She said incoming planes are landing only on the new Bridgeton runway, but there have been no delays for travelers.

CBS - St Louis

Now St Louis area law enforcement have been known to send a squad to chase down a minor offense. Overkill is a way of life in some places..and perhaps this was some overkill. On the other hand, St Louis was the official Murder Capital of the United States at least one year running, not that long ago, and consistently ranks near the top.

This town is in the North part of the Metro area and I knew the place when I heard the name. Been there for a few different customers in the truck. It's a bad area, in what is already among the real bad metro areas for the nation.

This is odd. I did a bit of looking around and seeing about such regulations. Now there are some spaces in the USA that is considered no fly zones. Places like Washington, DC, Disney World, and a few others. Other times there are some restrictions, say the President of the USA is visiting an area, and for his protection, they are limiting, the area and times flights can occur. That too makes sense as well.

However, the question must be asked as to why is there a flight restriction/no fly zone enacted around an area where there are riots are happening? Why does this start to look like they are intending to surround/restrict movement in the city, including those who are trying to flee/escape the violence. Something does not make sense at all.

Now if they cut all communications in and out of those areas, then something definitely is up.

It's a safety measure from the FAA. It makes total sense. It's not to herd people in for any nefarious purpose.

As a long time private pilot, I can tell you. It's not that rare for the FAA to issue a NOTAM for safety reasons.

No kidding on both accounts. However, complaining about restricting airspace where helicopters are concerned as a means of coverage kind of insinuates the news choppers have some semblance of trustworthiness, ergo, so does the channel to an extent.
