Earlier this year, Ma’Lik Richmond was released from detention nearly three months early. Now he’s back on the field.

Ma’Lik Richmond, the Steubenville High School wide receiver found delinquent of raping a 16-year-old West Virginia girl in 2012 with quarterback Trent Mays, has returned to his team roster as a senior, local station WTRF reported Monday.

In March 2013, Richmond was sentenced to one year in a juvenile detention facility but was released in January 2014; Mays was sentenced to two years and is still under detention. Their classification — Ohio’s Tier II — requires Richmond and Mays to register as sex offenders every 180 days for 20 years.

“Steubenville City Schools hasn’t really done a lot in the past two years to prove to the world that they don’t tolerate rape culture and allowing a Tier II registered sex offender on the team pretty much solidifies the assumption that they are concerned about wins rather than the safety of young girls or the destruction of rape culture in their area,” Goddard continued.

Who here who lives or watches the Ohio Valley news is surprised by THIS?

I would HOPE that the OV would boycott games this POS starts in, but who am I kidding?

HS Football is THE no. 1 activity in the valley. (Next to jamboree in the hills) ~shivers~

Shame that football trumps values or life lessons.

I have two questions about this.

1- can a convicted sex offender be around minors ? I would assume freshmen are 14 and still considered minors.

2- would this even make the newspaper if he returned to the chess club and not football?

This does show a lack of class by the football program by the way.

Not a good message at all. I'm from the area and will do what I can to see that he is removed from the team by bringing this to light. Oddly enough it took ATS to inform me about this as I haven't heard squat in the local news. I bet Trivisonno would have something to say about this, He sure did during the trial anyways.

Man I wish someone would break his knees and blow his scholarship and future, leave him as a shell of what he could have been. Seems fair to me.

Good for the kid, it is fine that he will be getting his life back on track.
It is not like anyone died, in fact there are people in this world murdering swaths of fellow human beings and being paraded as "heroes".
But this kid has served some of his sentence, others can get a reduced sentence, and they have killed!!!
On the brighter side... If the victim has the will, she will turn this negative into a positive and have a wonderful life, right?
An eye for an eye only leaves the world blind, amirite???

I don't know how to turn it into a positive, is gang rape as bad as genocide?
Some members here support this.
Those people are much more horrible than I am.
At least a rape victim has a chance to pick up the pieces, right?

The kid has served his sentence or part of.
He has paid his dues in the eyes of the law.
Now all involved should pick up the pieces and get on with life, right?

Here we go...
Ok, how is this Israel's fault?

Want to get rid of rape culture? Get rid of scantily clad girls and roided out football players.

Much easier said than done, particularly for the victim (which the football players were not).

I doubt the victim was thinking to herself that a little forced sex is not nearly as bad as genocide. Maybe you could try getting gang raped and report back how not bad it really is?

They drugged her and raped her, it was not like she was prancing around in lingerie.

i'd rather concentrate on roided out cops first.

The way to stop rape culture, at least concerning HS football, is to stop treating these KIDS like rockstars.

The troll is detracting from the topic.

Please don't feed it.

I never said this, but if you could point it out??
It is funny however that you associate rape and genocide with said state.
I simply stated that this young lady has a chance to get her life back on track, as well as the young man.

There ya go!
This is correct, the young boys are not necessarily bad but extremely misguided from a very young age I guess you could call it brainwashed to believe they are just better than the next person and have certain privileges as football stars.
I agree!
This sort of behavior really should stop.

Unless you have a kid attending big red, how do you plan on doing that?

Do me a favor and don't agree with me.

I never abided by that "product of my environment" crap.

Both my father & grandfather were raging alcoholics, and abusive.

I don't drink, and my children aren't afraid of me.

And everyone involved in this scenario (including those that support the HS football team) should be ashamed of themselves!
