They diverted around weather. They were above the most commonly used air defense systems in the region at the time, and the ICAO and FAA closed airspace was well south of where they were at the time they were shot down. As far as they knew, they were going to be able to safely fly over the area, and swing back on to their original course once they were clear of the storms.
