Ten year bump Zaphod58 , I wonder did they ever disclose why the flight was diverted hundreds of miles away from a safe path and into a war zone

They diverted around weather. They were above the most commonly used air defense systems in the region at the time, and the ICAO and FAA closed airspace was well south of where they were at the time they were shot down. As far as they knew, they were going to be able to safely fly over the area, and swing back on to their original course once they were clear of the storms.

I seem to remember Vladamir Putin had been in the air in that area and his plane had a similar silhouette to the one that was shot down ! .

The silhouette wouldn't appear on radar, but why would the separatists shoot at Putin? His government supplied them with the missiles to begin with and were backing them. It's far more likely that poorly trained radar operators mistook the plane for a Ukrainian military aircraft instead of a passenger aircraft.

Another 777 again? unlucky.
