Enormous crater appears suddenly in part of Russia whose name translates as 'the end of the world'
Teams of scientists are rushing east to fathom the cause of this unusual - and rare - geographical occurrence
One especially outlandish theory talks about a UFO landing as a possible cause of this colossal chasm in the earth
Well until or if they close my thread - the material was forced out and not in so it isn't a "collapse". It's also a near perfect circle which makes it a bit odder < is that a word? LOL

Why can't it just be a type of sink hole? Some cavern or something underneath that "gave out"?
Global warming may have caused an 'alarming' melt in the under-soil ice, released gas and causing an effect like the popping of a Champagne bottle cork, Ms Kurchatova suggests.
Global warming has been proven to not have been occurring Besides there's a large hole inside the hole that appears to traverse horizontally. One would also think the ejecta from a spontaneous eruption wouldn't be so neatly placed at the edge of the hole.

How does an "effing" sink-hole eject debris?
Initial reports and images were suspected to be fakes, but the hole is a real phenomenon and it is believed to have been formed around two years ago. Pictures: Konstantin Nikolaev
There is agreement that soil around the hole was thrown out of the crater, large enough for several Mi-8 helicopters to fly into it - not that they have.
The expedition organised by the Yamal authorities includes two experts from the Centre for the Study of the Arctic and one from Cryosphere Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They plan to take samples of soil, air and water from the scene.
They will be accompanied by a specialist from the Emergencies Ministry.
A spokesman for the ministry's Yamal branch ruled out a meteorite but said it was too early to say what cause the gigantic hole in the earth.
'We can definitely say that it is not a meteorite. No details yet,' said a spokesman
The thing about some type of eruption or explosion causing this seems to not jive with how well the ejecta is placed around the hole. I would think a spontaneous eruption/explosion would leave a random formation of debris and not as symmetrical and neatly placed as it appears to be. I would also think some of the ejecta would have landed at various distances from the explosion. Rocks and different material would travel different distances.

When the sinkhole itself is formed from something exploding underneath it.
