Bergdahl wasn't even held by the Taliban.

He was a coward and an idiot. He shot up dozens of unarmed innocent people ...killing them ... killing a pregnant woman. If he was brave, he would have spoken up and spoken out against what he thought was wrong. Apologies. Bringing up Major Hassan though, does illustrate the different approaches towards Bergdahl.

As to why the trade occurred?

NONE of what you said has anything to do with Bergdhal leaving his post and running with the enemy. He signed a contract. He agreed to do a job. His desertion put troops at risk and some even died because he left. There needs to be a trial. And it's disgusting that he is put on active duty status while honorable troops are given pink slips in the battle field.

HE agreed to do a job.
HE willingly walked off the job.

And no, he didn't have some kind of spiritual epiphany.
The people he hooked up with are the worst sort ...

if you sign a contract to join a honorable service of our country then you found out that your are lied to and your service was used as a tool to invade and murder people and steal their belongings , then who is in the breach of contract here ? berghdahl signed to serve his country in honorable way , not to be used as door kicker and enforcer for the US greedy elites.

In this regard , Bergdahl did the right thing. the ones that should be investigated is his squadmates who intentionally want to hit afghanistan kid with his vehicle. Why such behaviour tolerated by their commander ? because it is in afghanistan and no one cared about crimes done to the afghani civilians ?
