To the people that hates cheap plastic

Each time around here someone made a comment about plastics there is immediately a bash towards them as being the cheap plastic stuff that contaminates the sea. Well let me tell you polymers are not crap, cheap or trash, they are the backbone of everything made, the modern world is based on polymers, they exist in every aspect of your life, without them the current technological level that facilitates your life could not exist.

Most of them may be inexpensive to produce at large scale but just for that don’t thing they are of bad quality, most of the time they outperform alternatives materials.

The problem seems to be most people only thinks plastics are this

Cheap disposable trash, the truth is, they are only a part of what polymers are, a polymer is a molecule made of a small number of repetitible smaller units, unless all in your life is made from leather, glass or metal, it’s a polymers or plastic as people likes to call them.

So let’s see a few things that are a polymer:

Your clothes: most common fabric apart from cotton are polyesters.

Fiberglass/carbon fiber: pretty names no, well they are not carbon or glass, they are polymer composites reinforced with inorganic fillers, the biggest part of the material is the polymer and without it the carbon or the glass would be as your window or your pencil.

Hose/ tubes: all that is flexible and rubbery is a synthetic polymer, imagine your life without the ability to move a fluid with a flexible tube, I wonder how cars would look like without polymers…



All the doctor put on you: contact lenses, biodegradable stiches, joints, artificial skin all are polymers, in the future maybe your heart will be.



Know anyone alive thanks to dialysis? Well the membranes to filtrate the blood is made of polymers, do you like your reverse osmosis filtered water? The membrane is made of polyamide, hey do you know another kind of polyamide? Sure you do Kevlar.

Even money is made of polymers in some places, like Australia



The truth is all money is made of plastic, you see cellulose is a natural polymer, same as lignin so next time you think of inexpensive plastic trash, think in this

So your clothes are not a polymer as is made of cotton? Think again

Some plastic is still bad though....



Really bad.

It isn't plastic that's bad it's how it's used. It upsets me to open up a toy and have the plastic it is wrapped in take up 100 times more space than the toy. It shouldn't be used irresponsibly.

Acrylics, polymers and other types of plastic are indispensable in modern world.
The shame is that we don't recycle and create a huge mess.
