Well, it was.

ISIL is the consolidation of like-minded factions that were carrying out the same types of operations all around the Middle East and North Africa.

These ISIL guys did not just pop out of the ground. In fact the leader of ISIL was in US "custody" mere months ago.

Fact is, ISIS is only the current name of AQI, which had also gone under the name ISIL.

You are citing the date, January 2014, as their "creation date," which is factually wrong, that is only the date they declared their independence.

All ISIL is, is a name. And not only is it a name but it is the objective defined by its commanders: the "Islamic State". It's like how in the American civil war, there were the "Confederates" and the "Unionists".

We created this problem by basically leaving a power vacuum in the area. Thing is, I think we almost WANTED this to happen, because a destabilized Syria and Iraq will be too busy squabbling with each other to cause any organized opposition to the status quo. As long as the oil and natural gas flow (no matter who is controlling it day to day), I doubt the powers that be really care whether or not the fighting continues.

The fighters probably know it too, so they know that they can keep the big boys out of it, as long as the oil and gas keep flowing.

It also gives valid reasons to maintain the defense establishment, keeping the money flowing into their pockets.

Some members were trying to claim that the USA was not funding ISIS, and that ISIS had "reached its peak". Yet the "moderate rebels" that the USA government backs is defecting en masse to ISIS. How could this not be foreseen?

Syria captured lots of americans and CIA agents, during a run inside an ISIL (isis for u) command post in Syria. That's an extra proof that USA is leading these criminals.
