This decline in our magnetic field strength has been going on for years. I believe it is a precursor to a pole shift that will be survivable, but billions may die. I believe this is part of an ongoing cycle that happens every few 100 thousand years.

Edgar Cayce and many others have been predicting a pole shift. If Edgar and I are wrong we will simply all burn up from solar radiation.

I hope I am right.

You want billions to die? Odd...

You do realize the earth's pole has flipped many times in the past without any extinction events. Some birds might get confused on direction for awhile, but the actual earth is not flipping, just the magnetic field.

First, the article says it is weakening, not dying!

... You should use the title as is and not add hysteria to it....

Second, it is a news conference to showcase the new satellites so you need to consider the need for continuing funding. This is now a critical aspect of science.

but the November 2013 launch of the European Space Agency's three satellite Swarm constellation has allowed unprecedented precision in measuring these changes.

They have had less than a years worth of readings but feel great about making these grandiose claims.

I would suggest that these changes are cyclical and probably has a great deal to do with the Sun's output which is at a very low state hence why they are measuring what they are measuring.

Pseudo science at its best all in the name of finding more and more funding.

That is what I get from the article.

Science is now into doom porn.

No I don't WANT anyone to die, but if the magnetic field were to shrink away to nothing it would be far worse than a few tidal waves and high winds from a pole shift.

I don't believe that a pole flip would be anything to be afraid of, this is NOT the issue.

But the magnetic field of the Earth getting weaker (according to the daily mail 15% in the last 200 years - does anyone have other numbers?) IS SERIOUS.

Mind you, it's the absence of a magnetic field which may be ONE of the reasons why Mars is dead today.

A loss of the magnetic field...I hate to say it, but according to my "knowledge" would be a catastrophe. We would not have any protection from radiation from space, solar wind/flares etc. It would be something very, very bad.

I'd appreciate if some scientifically inclined people who know a little about this give their input. (YES, we know it's not a man-made thing whatsoever, the magnetic field is created by the Earth's core. But a loss of 15% in 200 years...IS BAD.)

Ok here:

news.nationalgeographic.com...

They say also that the field got weaker by 10% since 1845 (!) HOWEVER say that the field would get weak and then reverse, aka pole flip. I understand this in such a way as that the weakening does not mean the field would at some point entirely vanish but rather that the weakening is part of the process of a reversal

Maybe some avionics recalibration and change orders at compass manufacturers.

Im expecting the earth to do a 180 degree axial flip in mid-September of 2023. I dont know the day or hour, but probably before the 16th.

But can you prove its not dying? I need to know if i need to move to a cave. Just saying. This isnt something to just blow off.

YOU put the word Dying in there. No one else has.

Yes, by all means, go find a cave, a deep cave with no internet!

There is mounting evidence that you and Mr Cayce are Correct on that point at least though perhaps not so short a duration, indeed the idea of magnetic pole shifts is accepted in some circles.

If the magnetic field disappears so does our atmosphere. A cave with no oxygen isn't going to help you. My advice is to not worry about it since it is outside of your control.

I love how we snicker at the "primitive idiots" who were doomsayers throughout the ages. Up to and including the homeless guy with a sandwich board and a coffee cup. It is a great contrast to how we totally don't continue on that tradition to this day. oO

There is an interesting documentary called "Magnetic Storm" that looks into this question. I believe you can find it on 'Hot Docs'.

Nice source - great find.

What information leads you to this conclusion?

They want us to think it is because of an impending pole shift so they can keep mining and fracking the earth. Changing the way energy flows through the crust slightly alters weather patterns and can possibly influence the magnetic pole to move more rapidly. If you were to frack a magnet, it would not work quite the same. Now the field of the earth is no where as strong as a magnet, so altering that on a large scale can cause change.

We have been messing with the crust more and more, this means the effects would increase. No testing of this will be done because this generates a lot of money for businesses that contribute to science.

Why? In spite of the "recent" decline, the strength of the field is still a whole lot stronger than it was 50,000 years ago.

Even without a magnetic field the Earth's atmosphere provides the major protection against solar and cosmic radiation. There are more pressing matters to be concerned about. Could we be in the midst of a polar reversal? Yup. Does it matter? Maybe if you're a migrating pigeon.

You will find that iron samples that were fluid in magma samples then frozen in rock , show that the magnetic field has always changed.
The Earth is a dynamic ball of rock. We need both the magnetophere and the atmosphere to protect us from solar radiation.
It will be here way after your bones becomes someone else's mineral consumption.

It's a fact that the poles have flipped in the past, our atmosphere is still here. It didn't regenerate several times. When a pole flip happens first it weakens, then it flips, then it gets stronger again. If this wasn't the case, we wouldn't be here today. There is absolutely no reason to believe the next flip will be any different than the last ones, unless you are privy to information nobody else is.

Wearing away of a planet's atmosphere takes a loooong time, it's not like a balloon. Take away the magnetosphere and the atmosphere doesn't just disappear in a few years. In other words, even without a magnetosphere our atmosphere will be here a loooong time, and there is still no reason to suspect the Earth is going to loose it's magnetosphere.

The magnetosphere doesn't control or create gravity, if it flipped tomorrow you would have no idea other than news broadcasts and perhaps a few gadgets that act wonky.

While dealing with a weakened magnetosphere we would definitely be more vulnerable to CMEs and what not, but we wouldn't just instantly fry. Life on Earth lived through it many times before, and humans can survive a lot more than any other species.

The real worry is our Energy grid, that threat is real, and is always there. The threat of loosing our magnetosphere is one humans will likely never be alive to see. It's like worrying about when the sun is going to swell up and swallow the Earth- who cares? We won't see it, nothing of our current civilization will see it, why worry? Millions of years man, that's too much time to worry about something!
