This story here: politico article tells how the U.S. patent office has just ruled that the NFL franchise Washington Redskins no longer own a valid patent on their team name. Basically, it is now open season for any t-shirt maker or printer of giant foam hands who wants to use the term "Redskins" without paying the team a royalty.

It seems like the end is inevitable; the team must change it's name eventually, or congress or the president may act to deprive the own of even more of his personal property.

So, what name should they choose?

I suggest: The Washington "Persons of Pallor"

any other suggestions?

The Washington Redskins new name should be .... THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS.
I think they should change it to all caps all the time. And bold it.

Keep their name the Washington red skins. Just because everything in America is considered racist doesn't mean it is.
But for a new name I like." Washington what happened to America "

Yes because derogatory terms should always be in bold print shouldn't they.

Oh stop it. It's not derogatory. And the vast majority of Native Americans don't care. You, and the people pushing the change, are looking for a problem that doesn't exist.

The name is one thing, but in merchandise the value surely lies in the logo, and the logo is a registered trademark, which will be unaffected by the patent office ruling.

I replied to another similar thread. I vote "The Washington Honky Mo'Fo's." I think that would be hilarious. This whole issue is ridiculous. I have Native American blood. I have a ruddy shade to my skin. I am not offended in the slightest way by the name of a football team. They should have the Yellowskins and the Blackies, too, just to make it fair for everybody. I believe humor is the best weapon against perceived racism.

I hope this gets settled soon so we can work on that long standing travesty known as 'The Lone Ranger'. He wasn't so 'Lone' if he always had Tonto close by to bail his butt out. I find this to be a gross injustice and deliberate minimizing of the native American's role in the story (Jay Silverheels who played the character on TV was Canadian, but one affont at a time).

It needs to be either 'The Nearly Lone Ranger' or 'The Lone Ranger And 1'. Possible shoe endorsement opportunity there with the second option.

I would be proud to have a professional team named after my culture, even though some native indians use it as a derogatory term.

Washington Wasi'chu

Wašíču is the Lakota and Dakota (known collectively as the Sioux) word for people of non-indigenous descent,[1] with derogatory connotations. It expresses the native population's perception of the non-Natives' relationship with the land and the native population. Typically it refers to white people,[2] but does not specifically mention skin color or race. The term "black wasichu" has been historically used to describe a person of African descent, and a Native American who adopted non-Native ways could "make himself over into a wasichu."[3]

Pro athletic team names need to be something cool. That sounds like a sneeze.
