Is the entire science of Psychiatry a fraud?

I came across a very interesting article today claiming that Psychiatry is not a science because there is not one physical test to validate the existence of a mental illness:

Furthermore, the assertion that a chemical imbalance exists within the brain of a mentally ill person is nothing more than an urban legend.

I thought this would be a good topic to discuss and explore further...

This is not true at all. I suggest you do some further reading on the topic from actual scientific sources (i.e. not biased blogs).

Try reading the actual blog. You're reading it out of context. His assertion is absolutely correct. There is no established baseline for various neurotransmitters within the brain. It's an incredibly complex organ, and tinkering around with a whole neurotransmitters values by way of ingesting exogenous pharmaceuticals is highly unethical, considering there is no actual neurobiological testing given in nearly all cases before hand. There is no one way a human being is designed. We are all different, due to different genes interacting with different environmental stressors over time. To think that a baseline could actually be established, is ludicrous. Talk about the death of individuality. Not on my watch.

I would think that Psychiatry is more of a Pseudoscience en.wikipedia.org... created by big Pharma .When I was growing up dad would say "whats wrong with that kid " to my mom . Today they call it ADHD and probably have a pill to deal with it . Heck I think I read somewhere that teacher can actually compel parents to put the kids on medication .The teachers retirement portfolio just happens to have investments into Pharma so it becomes a win win for them come retirement . a reply to: UnderGetty

It's a blog filled with misconceptions and false assertions so try reading actual academic resources instead (although it appears you've made up your mind already without so much as a cursory look at the literature).

Psychiatry does get a bad wrap at times as it is a tough job trying to fix the complicated systems of the mind. With so many different components and interactions associated to the brain lots of many different things can and do go wrong. As with other fields of science like cosmology or climatology there is some understanding with more to still learn.

I believe it to be a massive fraud yes. I mean even the way that they introduce the symptoms into the DSM (that every psychiatrist works off of) is ridiculous, symptoms are VOTED into the DSM, that should say something about the validity of the "science"

Psyciatry simply finds defective human minds and hides them by suppressing the symptoms but never curing the problem,this means Society has no reliable means of identifying and keeping track of some of the sickest most dangerous human minds on the planet.

Human evolution is stalled by this action, if little Billy was a nutbar who was talking to invisible friends and babbeling to himself his entire life but was still a handsome young lad he would lkely not be reproducing easily, HOWEVER if you suppress little sick Billys peripheral Symptoms and hide them under an artificial sheild of medications he will seem like prime mate to many women,handsome,and normal,this is called non-disclosure ,it is like cerebral make-up.

We literally have hundreds of millions of semi-psychotic humans walking around hidden under a sheild of medications,it is no wonder we are such a mess,we cannot control who reproduces but we can stop misinformation and misrepresentation.

Then we see the arguement that no one wants millions and millions of unstable people walking around so this creates a societal demand for the drugs which hide the symptoms, and reinforce the societal acceptance levels of the act of not telling a potential mate you have a genetic disorder which is being suppressed with medications artificially,not cured but suppressed.

No one has a right to stop people from having kids,but we do have a right to expect that natural selection be accommodated .

i would prefer one non-medicated village idiot that everyone can identify accept and support to ten thousand medicated village idiots who are all ticking timebombs ready to go off unannounced.

DSM is the fraud. It is my opinion everyone exists in a spectrum of F'd up. According to the criteria for number of symptoms needed to be present I have 8 different personality disorders. It's pharmaceutical industry/incentive driven diagnoses coupled with lazy, misinformed parent all to willing to throw a pill at it. Why would a doctor lie, right?

Now there are some that really exist. Frontal cortex confabulation is real. Schizophrenia does exist, but it's faulty wiring (only numbed by medication), and symptoms more closely match dementia than any one of these "disorder of the week" illnesses.

Eh? There is plenty of evidence for chemical imbalances and resulting mental illnesses. This is absolutely 100% proven and can be measured. Serotonin is just one of them. Too little and you get depressed, too much and you'll suffer from anxiety. Lets not even start on the others. This article is the biggest lot of crock I've ever seen. Ref: I have a BSc [Hons] in Neuroscience.

Good point. And is there an established baseline for Serotonin by which the definition of "too much", and "too little" can be derived from? I'd like to know what that is.

Or is it a relative term based on assumption? Like "I feel neither happy or sad and so therefore the current level of Serotonin in my system is my baseline".

As far as the posts disregarding the points of the blog post based on the beliefs of the author... You know people can be correct on a subject regardless of their beliefs. If all you have in response to a persons point of view is an attack on their beliefs then you really have nothing. We see this in political debate all the time - if you can't respond to the topic, attack the person.

Mental health is pretty soft stuff. Talk to a provider from any other medical field. They're lower on the totem pole than general practitioners.

Psychiatry (specifically) probably stands on a bit more solid ground. I professionally respect most of the psychiatrists I interact with. Notable exceptions ... the ones who work with substance abusers (but they're a-holes, and that shapes my opinion).

No question about it...

Psychiatry IS a total complete FRAUD...

BTW, I am not a Scientologist and I oppose their beliefs. however, I do find a lot of his arguments on many different subject compelling.

I also oppose the beliefs and doctrines on Nazis, and yet I find their work developing decompression dive tables, immersion hypothermia treatments, and jet propulsion valuable.

Oh noooos the Seretonin! I am positive this chemical is related to depression and anxiety, and I am sure it varies in different people, but artificially supplementing it's uptake (via manufactured chemicals) stunts your ability to produce it naturally. SSRI's are like illicit drugs in this regard. The zoloft withdrawal is pretty harsh too.

Chocolate, exercise, sunlight, and healthy eating habits, are proven to be just as if not more effective in providing a Seretonin boost. Often times it's environment and lifestyle influencing these fluctuations... Like being trapped inside for long cloudy winters. Get a sunlamp, eat some chocolate.
