I guess the question is, how did China become such a power? Certainly the U.S. has helped them greatly in that department. Also there is good evidence that the west helped put Mao in power. When China was nothing, it's certainly plausible the infinite money of central bankers was used to buy power and influence. I'm not saying it's true, but certainly plausible that the Chinese elite would fall in line, like the elite of most other countries.

I think that you will find that Panama also has something of importance. Try transiting goods from the Pacific to the Atlantic, or vice versa without using the Panama canal. Its a long way round the Horn.
