Still needs 2 threads in the Collaborative writing forum, which only members of the actual story will be able to participate.

I'm fine with this one being left open for questions etc..

Actually, send me all the info for the thing once you get started, I'll post the WORKING thread, and you can do the official story one.

ETA: Not trying to step on your toes or anything, it's just generally speaking when you put an 'official' spin on things, they tend to go a bit better and the membership at large will take the threads and their intents for what they are. Nothing worse than having to OT a post in a story thread..

Ruins continuity.

Okay, I'm cool with making two other threads. I enjoy having a moderator involved, you got more experience with this than I do.

I'll give this some thought and send you the info...

I think its going to be a combination of economic collapse, and disease spreading following the collapse. So, sort of a martial law/collapse/pandemic combination.

This sounds like a good starting point. I'd suggest there's some kind of sudden event, though, so the characters can be together in the classroom at the moment when the *@#! actually hits the fan.

Does the disease logically follow the economic collapse? Due to overcrowded unsanitary shelters/camps, or collapse of infrastructure (ie hospitals), or something along those lines? I think that's what you're suggesting, but I think at some point they'd close the schools as the crisis developed slowly, and there wouldn't be an opportunity to have a dramatic scene where the whole class is reacting in real time to whatever is happening in the world outside.

If there's a trigger of some kind it would give a better opportunity for that dramatic scene of starting to react (it can still logically follow an economic collapse - a biological weapon attack by a state or independent group, an accidental release of a virus in the chaos of martial law, a crazy person who's lost everything snaps and takes hostages, etc)

Just my two cents. Excited to play with whatever ideas you decide on to start us off.

Star for the OP's Author! I am new to ATS so I can't award Flags just yet, but I will asap!

I spent 10 yrs playing RPG's [roleplaygames] on a daily basis with from one to about five players at anyone time.

I recommend utilizing the Champions Hero 4th edition game system rules for any game mechanics as it is all based on a points system that is very fair and balanced. This is only if such a game mechanics system is required for generating unexpected outcomes.

I am willing to play any NPC [non player characters] such as stand in extras, as required by the collaborative group [IF i get writer status, fingers crossed].

I would be willing to play the PC [player character] role of the teacher if no one else wants the role!

I look forward to seeing how this plays out and reading how the story unfolds.

I have applied to 10th for writer status!

Good luck with this collaborative project!

I think a lot of the teachers would die because they're book smart, not survivalist smart.

I think the redneck janitor should be the one who leads all(cause we all know that most rednecks will make it during such a scenario). Someone from such a lowly position(no offense) now more important than the principle. Oh how the tides change! Make him very reasonable, soft spoken, smart - with an abundance of common sense; Sort of a mountaineer MacGyver. He would spread his vast wisdom to everyone, well, except for the people who like to redneck-bash.

I still like the whole 'zombie-apocalypse' thing, but maybe it could be some sort of martial law. The gov. stooges are the zombies. The sickness is extremism. Regular folk are just trying to survive, clinging on to their beliefs as to what America used to be. People fighting at gas stations and grocery stores. Bands of raiders walking the roads, looking for people to rape, rob and eat. The janitor cold-cocks them upside the head with his pipe wrench. (he should have some corny saying like: I just tightened up that loose screw you had).

As cliche as it is, I want the setting to be a current SHTF apocalypse scenario - See more at: www.abovetopsecret.com...

The wind whips across the deserted earth pushing sand and shards a strewn across the center snaking them into and out of the innards and remains of the old civilization occasionally lifting enough earth exposing long calcified bones of those un-buried from years past. There is no movement of life or society on the surface just the passing blackness of clouds adorned with soot and ash bellowing before a bleeding sun...

Sorry I'm taking a little longer to put this together... a lot of things came up at once. Keep the feedback coming though! I'm reading everything.

Based off some of the suggestions others have made.

I'd suggest starting the story on a field trip.

Maybe a deep underground mine, now used for scientific experiments like finding dark matter.

That would be the reason this group survives when it hits the fan.

Either a foreign government or aliens install a weather control system that turns nature against the inhabitants of Earth.

The final result are vast deserts left because of the theft of much of the fresh water in regions of the planet.

The janitor of the facility could be an outdoorsman or ex military.

The group tries to survive a harsh inhospitable world..............

Good stuff! Please don't think I've abandoned this project, guys. I'm currently working on a graphic novel, a fanfiction, and I'm starting on a mini conspiracy documentary soon. But I'm not gonna let this story fall through, just be paitent with me!

A strange news story has a unique combination of words and ideas and causes everyone hearing it to think about their lives and highest goals. Somebody puts a loud speaker on a drone and it circles around the high school, blasting out the story.

A few students immediately leave the room and look for work. A few students begin to interrogate the teacher, who is answering the best she can. Some students go to the library. Most just sit there, thinking.
One student tries to tell everybody what to think.

Sounds like ALL great feedback...

I think I might get started on the story tonight. I'm stuck between my fanfiction and this project tonight, and I'm having a Back-to-the-Future mental block. If not tonight, then I will post the story AND come up with the rules very soon.

We should be expecting a working thread from Tenth soon, then we can start posting character stats. The character stats have to be posted before June 10th, and you won't be able to participate in the story unless you've posted character stats in the working thread (and unless you have writing status).

Keep an eye on the collaborative story forums!

YEAH! The working thread has been made!

Right here ---> Doomsday By Design (Working Thread)

Anyone who wants to participate, bring it home! Go make some character stats!

I've also "topped' this thread as well as the working thread in both forums for easy finding.

Cant' wait to see what you guys have in store for us!

Talk to Tenth about that if you want to participate.

I couldn't do that. There are folks that have worked super hard to get writer status. I would feel bad just having it handed to me, regardless of how badly I want it. It would be a hollow victory, so to speak.

I am reading the story though, pretty good so far!

I know how you feel, believe me.

But Tenth offered to give writer status to whoever wanted to participate, as long as they don't have a bad rep on ATS. Its worth a shot.
