Anger speech is not the same as hate speech. I'm loathe to revisit the Micheal Richards' fiasco, but I will do so.

Initially, the media showed the world a snippet of the infamous incident at a CA comedy club. Richards frothing and foaming, yelling "you're a ___" over and over at a man in the crowd. The wheels of public opinion were swift to track Richards down and run him over, back up, run him over again, wash, rinse, repeat. Then Richards made the "Self immolation tour" of pseudo news programs and talk shows, apologizing, presenting himself as being akin to the devil, etc. Then, amazingly, stunningly, after weeks of Richards' unaccepted supplications, the media releases a longer video. This longer video shows that for a good 10+ minutes Richards quietly tried to ignore vicious racially driven heckling from the man that we were supposed to see as the poor victim (because after all, nothing is as devestating as words, right?) Cracker! Whitey! Jewish slurs, etc... all thrown at Richards until he had an absolutely natural reaction: he snapped. He returned like with like in a moment of anger and his *ahem* "victim" waltzed away without any repercusions over him actually starting, escalating, and continuing the actual verbal barrage.

That's not racism or hatred on Richards' part, it's called ANGER. It sometimes makes you do or say dumb stuff and it usually searches for an answer to the question: "What is the worst possible thing I can say to get this dude to shut the hell up or at least make me look like I'm saving some face here?" It's controlled by pride, not White Pride, but personal pride. It also comes up often in serious arguments between married people. Is the man who calls his wife a "bitch" in the middle of a personal very heated argument a misogynist? Is any man who's used the word to describe a catty woman a misogynist? The gals at NOW would probably say so. What about the dudes who ocassionally drop a dreaded C-bomb? Katey bar the door on that one!

Context is often independant of what's actually being said and very reliant on why its being said. Understand a lot of law enforcement is probably pretty angry at Obama right now. Hell, a lot of citizens are angry at him right now. Being angry and using anger words doesn't make them bad people, it makes the human people... with emotions and with pride, and that sometimes leads to verbage that they'd never consider saying or even thinking if they weren't angry. Never judge a man when he's angry, a child when they're tired, or an animal when its hungry.

Did you even watch the clip?

Of course you didn't, a 4 minute clip and you post less than 2 minute after me.

It is actually very insightful. You should watch it.

Got this on DVD. Funny as hell!!

When you seek to apply a double standard.

Who has a double standard? If Obama came out and called, say, Romeny a "Fu&%ing cracker", Id think the people have every right to question whether he should still have his job. No double standard.

There is also a VERY big difference between art and personal sentiment, but thats another topic.

You can't have a Free Society with equal Rights for all. Then start trying to apply your personal standard to a certain group of People.
Whose rights were violated here? You all keep talking about that, but no one will say.

Either we are all equal or we are not.
In the eyes of the law, we are.

Why should any group be excluded from Society's rules ?
Show me a black public official using a derogatory racial slur against someone, and Ill show you the same reaction I have here.

Otherwise, I tend to just write them all off as the same: ignorant. And its got nothing to do with what race they are.

I notice a couple of things here:

First, the best examples I keep seeing as defense are all entertainers: Musicians, comedians....they really arent parallel.

Second, I think you are confusing my use of the term hate speech. I am not using it in the legal manner. I already posted the definition.

Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of e.g. race, religion, gender, disability, or sexual orientation

Fact: They have every right to boot him out of town if they want

The only right anyone has is to defend ones own life and to defend that of ones children(familey). Everything else is human construct and most of it is designed to put us against each other as to keep us busy while the lawmakers and "freedom fighters"
take control of our lives and turn us into drones. they use fear and propiganda, it seems to be working, and on ATS of all places.

Self righteous?

Its takes an interesting mindset to call the social rejection of racism self-righteous...

The whole "you used a racial slur" so you're a racist is just a bunch of B.S. I grew up in an area where guys constantly went after each other with slurs about race, nationality, religion and just about anything else you could think of. Sometimes they were angry, but sometimes it was like a test and other times it was their way of including someone in the group . . . yes . . including them. You know why? Because a lot of men, some of the best as far as I'm concerned, don't like whiners and they're uncomfortable with overly sensitive sorts. Sometimes a little verbal back and forth is a way of taking the measure of each other.

You know who you could be sure they wouldn't use a racial/ethnic/etc. slur with? Someone for whom they had no respect. Someone who they wouldn't cross the street to piss on if they were on fire.

I don't make a habit of using the "N word" but I have used it on occasion, usually in a joke or because I'm pissed off at someone. I'll probably use it again before I die. Am I a racist?

I've got 2 years of living in one of the most dangerous African American neighborhoods in the States as a full time volunteer seeing to it that those who needed a meal got fed, that those that needed a place to stay, or even just car fare got it. I saw racism, real racism during that time, and it was never accompanied by a racial epitaph.

If I see someone with a flat tire, regardless of race, I'll stop and help them fix it.

If I see someone down on their luck and I've got a little extra, I'll give it to them regardless of race.

If my niece gets married and he treats her like his end all and be all, I'll be at the wedding with a smile, regardless of his race, (as long as he's not a lawyer).

Am I a racist? Say what you want, think what you want, but I know better and I've learned not to judge other people so much on what they say, certainly not what they say in anger or frustration, as by what they do.

I want to know if the Sheriff would stop, on his way home, and help a black guy or woman fix a flat tire. Because you know what? That's what matters.

Of course you have a double standard.

You want one group of people to use a word with impunity.

You want another group of people not to use a word because of your preconceived notions.

Can't you see that is not equality ? Seriously can't you see that?

Why can't we have single standard for all of humanity ?

Im going to ask again, since it keeps getting avoided:

You all have established that it bothers you that black people can use the word but you cant (which says a lot in itself). So, tell me, how does the fact that black people use it excuse this person's use of it? If you dont agree with black people using it, why are you defending a white persons right to use it?

The psychology behind these arguments is OBVIOUS, for anyone that is looking....

You want one group of people to use a word with impunity.
I do? Since when? Maybe you ought to go back a reread what I have said. Or maybe its just a pattern you guys like to use....lying to sway a readers views.

take a few minutes, go back, read my words. Then try again on this one.

You want another group of people not to use a word because of your preconceived notions.
Again, what do you base this on? I dont want ANY public official to say "fu@#ing Ni$%er" in public, but thats hardly the point. My stance, all along, is that the town has every right to throw him out if they want. And its true.

Can't you see that is not equality ? Seriously can't you see that?
the only thing that I can see is that you are either deliberately perverting my words to try and make a point, or are totally lost on what I said.

He has a right to his private conversation...but he doesn't have immunity to consequences.

It is up to the voters in that area what they want to do, if they decide he should resign then he should resign.

I personally would push for his resignation, because people need to learn that outdated racist views will not be tolerated anymore.

Uh, you mean oudated 'white' racist views, correct???
