Imagine being an adult male and being tossed in jail for 'disobeying your father'. Imagine seeing a government official spouting extreme violent religious nonsense and not being able to say 'hey, that's stupid'. Imagine daring to try to educate your fellow countrymen that it's okay to be an atheist, and you get threatened with the death penalty. Imagine being sentenced to ten years in jail and a thousand lashes ... and you have done no harm to anyone.

I thank God that I live under secular rule of law.
It's the only sensible way to run a country.
Saudi Arabia can run it's country any way it wants, of course.
But I'm really glad I don't have to put up with their nonsense.
And I feel bad for those who live there and have to.

Saudi Arabia orders 1,000 lashes and ten-year sentence for editor of website that discussed religion

Raif Badawi, who started the "Free Saudi Liberals" website, was arrested in June 2012 and charged with cyber-crime and disobeying his father - a crime in the Arab state, local media has reported.

His website included articles that were critical of senior religious figures such as Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti and allegedly insulted Islam and religious authorities, according to Human Rights Watch.

Prosecutors had demanded Badawi be tried for apostasy, a charge which carries the death penalty, but this was dismissed by the judge.

He was arrested two years ago but is only now getting the sentencing aspect figured out. This fellow is a Muslim (from what I'm reading) but it should be noted that Saudi Arabia has declared Atheists to be terrorists. The article also goes on to mock how Saudi Arabia had the audacity to recently complain about Norway's human rights record. (seriously true ... Saudi Arabia has no business telling others about 'human rights')

The person the editor was complaining about is Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti. We had a thread on him here at ATS -
ATS Thread - Saudi Arabias Grand Mufti Calls for Destruction of All Churches on Arabian Penninsula Funny .. some ATSers said that it doesn't matter what the Mufti says but apparently it does. You can lose your life for pointing out the evil the things he says.

Tolerant bunch, those Muslims.

I can't wait for them to become firmly entrenched in the US so that we can have their version of peace.

Not.

Can we just nuke them off the face of the earth yet?

Oh that's right, they have OIL. I guess we'll put up with their tyranny towards themselves and us while they still have something we want.

Wouldn't the oil be cheaper if they were all up there with Allah, doing the 72 virgin horizontal mambo?

Who knows.

I was more trying to point out the hypocrisy of us here in the west. We'll sit back and let them run their barbaric practices of sharia law so long as the oil keeps flowing out of their pipelines.

Just to repeat what was said on another thread here .... 1,000 lashes IS a death sentence. No one can be whacked that many times and survive. Now if they spread it out over the 10 years ... 100 lashes a year ... maybe he'll survive. But considering the severe lack of human compassion and the extreme stupidity of the government there, I doubt they'd think to spread it out.

Oh, you make a valid point.

I was just trying to show what might be a win/win scenario for the West's energy gluttony and world peace.

It's so difficult to hear Muslims insist that Islam is a 'religion of peace', and I try not to be judgemental about the spread of Islam throughout the world.
Being that their main belief is to convince every human on the planet to believe and worship as they do, or kill them in the name of allah if they don't, it's very hard to remain unbiased in my thinking.
Seeing this 'peaceful' religion spread throughout the world doesn't seem like a very good idea. It could one day make Jone's Town look like a very minor event.
Worshiping the Creator with love and peace in one's heart seems to be a rare thing in organized religion.....especially Islam.

Anything over 500 is likely death. Most if not all layers of his skin will be flayed off leaving bones and organs exposed. If the shock and blood lose don't kill him he will almost certainly get a fatal infection in the fetid prisons they have there.

Even spaced out the condition in prison there will likely lead to a fatal infection even if spaced at a 100 lashes a time.

Are you not just proud how the USA is giving top military tec to there barbarians to prop these regime up?

I said it that way on purpose.
I don't believe 'GOD' would approve of the religious rules of law that we are seeing.
So I say 'thank you God' for not making me live under religious rule.

Bush the lesser always held Prince Bandar's hand in public.
All the Saudis were allowed to fly out of the US on 9/11.
How much more entrenched do we need to be?
We are the third largest oil producer on the planet...gas was $3.60/ gallon.
Saudi Arabia? Less than a dollar US.
The rabbit hole goes deep, my friend.

It pretty clear Jesus did not want Christians to be any part of the political system.

so your right, he wants Christians as far removed as possible.

We are. We sell ours to China and India and others instead of refining our own.
We could be independent right now from Middle Eastern oil. But the profits would fall. And the billions in tax money on top of record profits are making for some damn well paid politicians.
