Q : How can it be that a man convicted of a string of armed robberies including assault on a 73 year old woman and sentenced to 13 life sentences in 2002 be allowed to walk out of prison with the blessing of the authorities ?

A: He lives in the UK !

It gets worse ! , This armed robber was housed in an open prison and 3 weeks before his crime spree started he'd been released on parole from a 27-year sentence for other robberies.....You couldn't make it up !!!

The robber Michael Wheatley affectionately known as 'Skull Cracker' failed to return to HMP Standford Hill open prison after being allowed out on day release.

I think the U.S judicial system is a bit on the tough side but ours is absolutely ridiculously geared toward the criminal with no real punishment for offenses committed , prisons here are lax and sentences short so if there's any villains out there reading this come to Britain we are open for business

Michael Wheatley, 55, was given 13 life sentences at the Old Bailey in 2002 for a string of brutal raids on banks and building societies.

Kent Police said he failed to return to HMP Standford Hill open prison on the Isle of Sheppey.

Officers are now searching for Wheatley, with the public advised not to approach him.

From the link

Former prisons minister Crispin Blunt said it was "fantastically stupid" of Wheatley not to return to the prison

Errrr... methinks it was "fantastically stupid" of whoever released this man early..

The system even in Canada has always been a revolving door for psycho's, but really stick it to the woman being raped who uses bear spray.

I too live in the UK and firstly thanks for inviting the worlds worst to our small island. its not like we're already struggling to keep people away, but more to your post.

I agree that the UK law is pretty much a joke anyway, and yeah this bloke being let out is also a joke and he should have been locked up and the key lost down the deepest darkest well known to man, but to call ours the worst or a joke is ridiculous.

just look at the middle east, for stealing peoples hands are cut off, thats HANDS, and women who sleep around can be stoned to death STONED to death. Russia, China they just lock people away for the fun of it, and in case you wanna say that you meant the western world then lets look to America, they have the death penalty, they kill criminals who kill, not much sense in that, (Although they believe in the old eye for an eye deal), they recently had a guy who commit countless rapes on a kid who went and killed herself and he was given I think it was either a suspended sentence or a few weeks cant remember which (although apparently that's being over turned), they let off celebrities with just a couple days in prison and those are the ones that I can think of while writing this.

I'm sure if people did their own research you would find America, and many countries in Europe and the world that let criminal scum out of prison, not I'm not attacking your theory but to label an entire legal system a joke is annoying when you claim that we're the worst. Remember celebrities in America such as Chris Brown who beat the crap out of Rhianna (i think that's her name) wasn't even arrested, Paris hilton spent a couple days in prison the first few times.

Again I agree our law might be flawed and closer to a joke than I'd like but I would like to remind you that there are far worse countries with ridiculous legal systems in the world.

(I'm a proud Brit and will defend this country from ridicule unless its a proven point. I'm agreeing with your theory to an extent but not that we're the worst)

Indeed there are worse counties but this is Britain and to be honest I expect better but that goes for a lot of things in this country at the moment.

This is exactlly the kind of case which gives foriegn crimminals the idea we have a soft touch when it comes to justice.
At least there have been a few politicians saying how crazy this is,but lets be honest they make the rules,so its up to them to stop this nonsense. It should never have happened in the first place though.

Sometimes I think Earth has flipped into an alternate dimension sometime in the last 20 years.Thats the only way I can rationalise whats happening.

gortex, I could not agree with your sentiments more on this issue.

The fact is that our prison system is far less rigid than the government would have us believe, and in fact, has steadily and under successive governments, become less and less able to deal with the criminal element, which is ridiculous, because that is after all, the only one of its functions that the public consider important.

Personally speaking, I would like a blanket ban on open prisons, a blanket ban on day release, a blanket ban on early release, an insistance that all terms be served in full, regardless of behaviour, conversion to Christianity or Islam, or improvements in an inmates psychological adjustment. One is not put in prison to teach them a lesson or to punish them in my view. Imprisonment should be a measure undertaken with the sole purpose of keeping criminals locked away from thier potential victims. I think it would be an idea if all violent offenders were locked up until they reached sufficient infirmity that they pose no threat to anyone at all, but that might be considered extreme.

This man however was serving something like THIRTEEN life sentences. He should never have seen the bloody SKY let alone an open road! He should have been behind the walls of a prison until he was carted off and buried, not galavanting around the Isle of Sheppey! What a bloody disgrace! I hope they shoot the bugger on sight, and then do the same to the flipping morons who approved his being allowed out.

This is unbelievable, it truly is.

He has escaped prison on two occasions and he started committing crime 11weeks after being released on parole, after serving an additional sentence. This hardly looks favourable on the party of justice, what were they thinking?

The law is an ass or arse, whatever you prefer!!
