While the Copenhagen Zoo is getting tons of criticism over the culling of Marius and its recent culling of four lions, it doesn't even touch the unethical and inhumane conditions these poor animals are going through.

There is a difference between conservation for biodiversity and complete negligence.

The zoo has a collection of 3,459 animals from 197 species, but 81 animals are sick, disabled, and old, and 44 of which are in severe conditions.

This bear has skin lesions.

This lion has had it's teeth pulled out; its hunting instinct completely gone.

Melani, a severely underweight Sumatran tiger, is wasting away.

The 18-month-old African lion named Michael was found early on January 8th, 2014. "The lion was found hanging from the roof of his cage. He was very young and got his head stuck in cables that keepers use to open and close the cage,"

The zoo’s last remaining giraffe perished. An autopsy revealed a “beach-ball sized wad of plastic food wrappers” inside its stomach that weighed a shocking 39 pounds.

Bison in the corner of its cage with an eye disease.

Chandrika, a white Bengal tiger, died after suffering from liver and kidney diseases. She was also missing her left ear.

Elephants, both babies and adults, are chained and kept in confined cages.

Fitri, a sick 35-year-old female elephant was suffering from swollen joints in her legs.

There is a petition to close this zoo but I will not link to avoid breaking terms and conditions for recruiting for cause.

More information regarding this zoo and it's treatments.

How absolutely heartbreaking.
WTF is wrong with these people?

Where the hell is Bush Gardens, The World Animal Fund, or even PETA for cripes sakes?

Send me the link, I'll post it.

This is horrific.

But you are going at this all wrong... If you want unaware people to pay attention, it seems you have to play this song.

And how sad is it, that this has been going on for years here, and instead of trying to help these animals, the f morons just keep playing the blame game.

String 'em all up. (People in charge.)

Sorry, but damn this makes me mad.

It is beyond comprehension to me that they were able to get away with keeping animals in such condition for what must have been a long time. I've been to several well-known zoos in my life and only one of them didn't have me feeling bad when I left. Preserving species is one thing, but people shouldn't be able to confine wild animals for profit - usually under the veil of education.

I really became passionate about this kind of abuse when I was a kid and went to Sea World and saw just how breathtaking and intelligent the animals were - particularly the orca whales. In my view the way they are kept is no different than what we call slavery. The way they are captured and taken from their native ecosystems and family units, the way they are later kept, the fact that they are forced to work, and the general disregard of their health by the suits and ties who "own" them are all characteristic of slavery.

Those pictures are scarring, but a valid reminder of our responsibilities as humans (who take species out of their natural habitat and attempt to 'recreate' them. as a concrete cell.)

But the WORST thing? That goddamn vet (in the article you provided with a link) having her so called beliefs on animal contraception, and her views on euthanasia. I by no means feel like it's okay to kill animals, but if you have a suffering white tiger slowly dying, or a bear with untreated skin lesions, maybe you need to do your FREAKIN JOB and not come up with some 'moral' excuse as to why you wouldn't treat them. She probably thinks regular vet shots will give them autism. You can't argue with hunting seasons, meant to control over bearing populations of animals lower on the food chain. We have screwed up the balance, so we had better be watching it and re balancing.

How can someone go out and say I don't believe in Euthanasia, but I sure do believe in taking animals from their homes and letting them die a slow and painful death for all to watch. I won't say I've never been to a zoo, but I have always felt horrible going, even as a kid. My childhood animal friends were never locked up, and I wondered why these had to be. But I've come to see now, that the damage is done, and if a zoo is at least earning their money to keep their animals healthy and happy, and supporting the wildlife it hasn't stolen, then there may be a place in society.

And no Sarah McLachan please it's too early here to start bawling

W..t...F??! I dont think I've ever wanted to harm another human being like I want to harm the people responsible for this. I want someone, right now, to get on a plane, go there, and take over that zoo, by force, save those poor animals, and put those responsible in place of them. holysht I'm so disgusted right now, Im ashamed of our whole species.
