Yup apparently the woodpecker has gone active again, I heard it on friday arvo while at work. It was in the 20m amateur band and leaking up and down the frequencies.

I'm all new to this and I would like to ask what is UVB-76 ?

What is this for ?

I did read up about the doomsday transmitter signal but I think this is somwhat a totally different thing.


If anyone could explain or post a link to some additional information I would be great full.

Doubtful it is the same one, or has the same purpose. More likely it is Russian jammers walking around on all the frequencies used in the Ukraine / Crimea.

I've heard a voice in the UVB now, but it was so fast and uncompreensible (Not woodpecker)

And if each of us hear 10 ~ 30 minutes of UVB? I think we can find something

Someone can give me what they said? I'm good at decoding.

Another russian station known as the Pip also transmitting voice message right now, but it's uncomprehensible and fast. Strange! They were both offline few hours back...

I've heard now strange sound/pitch changing in the UVB and the motor background sound changed, but it is back to normal

It almost sounds like there is an old school dot matrix printer going right after each buzz.

Given that its Russian, I can actually see them rocking the dot matrix high tech.

Ooh, I love this stuff. How can the reasoning behind this remain so secret after all these years. I mean, someone does know the secrets and not everyone can keep them.

Well its odd that it starts near global unrest just before a possible war, so im still going with the messages to spys thing.

If none of its been cracked now, why rely on the internet or a phone for communication?

That site is very credible. Simon Mason is a long time expert on numbers stations- I've enjoyed his site for years.

Generally speaking, numbers station activity has picked up... I haven't been able to catch any voices on UVB-76 yet. But I imagine that as things pan out in Eastern Europe we will continue to hear more.

The Woodpecker is not UVB-76.

UVB-76 is "The Buzzer".

The Woodpecker is Duga3, which not only is NOT in Russia any more, its actually in the Ukraine, inside the Chernobyl quarantine zone. In fact it was built close to Chernobyl (less than a mile), because it needed that much power. Also, the woodpecker has been literally stripped out for metals, by the locals.

So yeah, the Woodpecker hasn't gone active again, for it to do so would require that Russia invade the Ukraine itself and not just Crimea, decontaminate the quarantine zone, and spend billions refitting the woodpecker... It's the Buzzer that has gone active again.

Also, they don't NEED the woodpecker any more. It was a very early, very crude phased array radar, for OTH missile detection. Although there is the fact that it clogged up airwaves, so I guess thats a "sorta" purpose. They have much better systems for OTH radar now days.

The buzzer's purpose is still... Unknown. Its suspected that its a dead-mans hand system (if the transmissions ever stop for more than x, launch nuclear counterstrike kind of thing), that can double as a numbers station when required, but that's just conjecture.

We know what the function of the woodpecker was, because its been examined in detail, after the Ukrainians kicked Russia out of the Ukraine. We've never had the chance to examine the buzzer.

It's still going strong. I've been listen since all the tension and events have been unfolding around Ukraine and the buzzer has been constant so the Russians are on high alert with agents ready to take instructions.
