China really has no need to annex Taiwan. Currently the ties between to the two are about as close as you can get without flying the same flag. Taiwan will end up joining China but in the same way as Hong Kong and Macau being a SEO (special economic zone). They are not about to upset that apple cart.

As for the Spartly Islands, that is a different story, they are after the minerals under the islands and really don't give a hoot about whats above the water. Secondly it would allow them to expand their airspace and navel reach over the majority of the South China Sea and that is what can't be allowed.

China's interest in the Crimea is born out by them abstaining. What the US and Europe fail to understand is that 97% of the people voted to join Russia. That was the voice of the people so the US and Europe need to shut up and accept the fact that the people chose Russia. Besides neither have a leg to stand on as they are both guilty of overthrowing legitimate governments and attacking sovereign nations without provocation. Russia has not done that with Crimea. What the US and Europe did in the Ukraine was not exactly legal but since it's in their interests it's OK, pfffft. What a bunch of hypocrites.

One needs not remind you of Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya for starters of the US and Europe's illegal military activities. Neither of them voted for the change whereas Crimea did. Get over it, the people chose and they chose Russia.

In the UN vote the abstained which is sign to the West that China is sitting this thing out.

Sitting it out yes, in a proactive self interested way that accomplishes their future goals within the framework current of available moves. In a way you have to admire the way China plays the game.

They've been playing this game for thousands of years internally, looks like they've taken it to the world stage in the last 40 years.

Just like how Russia and China both abstained with regards to Libya?

Should we admire Russia and China for that as well?

Russia and China abstained rather than use their veto, due largely to the influence of the Arab League.

Two wrongs are still ummm.. Wrong

No, Russia and China (and Germany's) abstention should is a mark of shame IMO. They should have vetoed the whole Libya no fly zone at the get go.

Abstaining on that vote and allowing what happened in Libya does allow Russia and China to point at the US, Britain, France, etc and call them hypocrites in their current "outrage" over Ukraine.
