I'm just wondering what would happen if enough americans just decide to stop paying taxes?

I guess it only applies to income tax... ("That'll be $1.05." "Nope. Here's 99 cents." That wouldnt work too well... Also, 6 cents is irrelevant, but its easier to do math with small numbers....)

I mean, they can't arrest everyone.... What would they do? Fine everyone? But if we still just don't pay...

If enough people say they've had enough, and they're not happy with our current representation.

I wonder....

There was a time when the people could stand up to the ruling power.

This country was born that way.

But those days are gone.....

If martial law is declared, the people don't stand a chance...

No amount of guns and ammo could withstand our military force. =\

Our only chance would be to have whole factions of the military join our partisanship.

But yeah.... Not ideal situation.

Just a what if.

Wait, are you talking about Sales Tax or Income Tax. Your example is confusing me. Sales Tax is 7 cents, income tax is something else entirely.

Clearly stated in the text you quoted that it would only apply to income tax. (With a pretty bad example of why it wouldn't work well or make any sense with sales tax)

It is doable and it is our ultimate veto power. However, it is always better to remove destructive taxes and have legitimate governance.

Ironically, the higher the taxes, the higher the unemployment which, in a welfare state such as ours, increases the expenditure of the state at the expense of real financial activity in the private sector.

Economies go down the drain counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Never happen .. people too afraid to make the stand ..

Given the fact that some of our troops participated in drone-missile-shredding a 68 year-old grandmother in a garden (with children), you may be right. The behavior of our troops and NGO's in foreign lands speaks to the future of our country. It does not get much darker or twisted than this.

Given the sheep-like daze that has engulfed our citizenry, I worry for our children and grandchildren.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

A national strike one or two days a month would reduce one's amount of income, and therefore would reduce one's tax contribution. A few quid a month less tax might not seem much, but if everyone did it, it would amount to quite a vast sum. And I'm sure our government would soon notice the £billions less revenues coming in.

The only way to hurt government and to make it sit up, shut up, and listen, is to choke off the money.

Governments cannot function without our taxes.

STRIKE.

That's also what Canada does.
According to this, the US does the same.

en.m.wikipedia.org...

Amounts withheld by payers (employers or others) must be remitted to the relevant government promptly. Amounts subject to withholding and taxes withheld are reported to payees and the government annually.

How can you stop paying unless you stop working?
Sales tax has to be paid, because the store has to pay it.

Then they'd have to actually switch on their long dormant creative brains and come up with ways of actual money making.

I avoid paying tax by not buying a lot of crap I dont need. I keep my money, they dont. Everyone stopping spending will be far more calamitous then any sort of tax protest. They would just print more and offset it with a bubble like the housing market again. Stop buying stuff, oh no no no.

It would also mean NO government reprisals, as its the corporations and banks problems, so they best fix it.

Its the consumer thats king eh.

Just a note, they could not do it back then either. If France, Spain and the Dutch had not decided to use the revolution as way to go after Englands global empire, thus diverting troops that could have been used to crush the revolition, the revolt would have been crushed.

As for the OP why would people? Sure people complain about things but, lets face it they would be what we call 1st world problems. So long as people have plenty to eat, money to spend, and the freedom to do as they please nobody is going to do anything beyong complain.

Why don't we demand our senators and representatives address the tax structure? I would love to get rid of the income tax at all levels. We don't pay State income tax in my state. I would like to see a sales tax structure, except on food.

Everything from roads to care for the poor would disappear. You'd need to study a bit on what taxes are used for. (I don't mean military etc). Youll see as you get older that when you don't vote for tax increases (I sure don't but I vote)...programs disappear and people suffer.

Many many things all around us are there only because of taxes. Are they too high and should thing change? Of course...but if everyone all at once stopped paying...we'd prob stop living because our infrastructure all around us would collapse with no money to maintain things.

That just my opinion on the immediate repercussions.

While most people don't enjoy paying taxes, most understand why we do.
