Beijing-bound MAS plane carrying 239 people missing as of 20 mins ago.

With 7.5 hrs of fuel they aren't in the air anymore that's for sure. The flight was 6 hrs long and they are several hours late. Not good.
Let just pray the pilots somehow, someway landed it.

The 777 has never had a major maintenance issue. It has one of the best records of any plane out there.

Had it landed, would communication be impossible?

I'm not familiar enough with how aircraft work, but I do know telecom and as long as they were within satellite range ( I assume they use that form of comms) then they could be located via GPS.

I guess unless the crash landing wrecked all the electronics.

Aircraft have HF and UHF systems on board. We used to do radio checks on one system and talk to people in Australia from the ramp in Hawaii.

I'm sure it was mechanical or birds flew into the engine...etc etc..volcano ash etc. Hijacked and headed to Australia for asylum.
As of now. There are any number of reasons.

What makes me nervous. Is that this thread is full of moderators. And that makes me suspicious of this tragic situation.
We're talking people. And 2 babies..

What I find interesting is this aircraft as most others have a beacon. And even the signal is not been noticed yet if it did crash..

Edit: I changed the issue with batteries and stress cracks as I was told back in Oct of 2013.
The reason for the change is Zaphod cleared up the 777 good record of maintenance. IIncorrect. was

Lost in Vietname airspace.
M air nown for running on just enough fuel. Avoid them.

The 777 has never had a battery problem. It's never had any major mechanical issues related to the aircraft.

Beacons fail, sink, or other problems.

Well it's been missing for 3 hours + at this point.

Doesn't seem like the weather would have had significant impact, unless I"missing something.

The first 777 that crashed was a British Airways aircraft equipped with Rolls Royce engines. They found that the heat exchanger in the Rolls engines was allowing ice to build up in the fuel on long high altitude flights through extremely cold weather.

The result was a power rollback on final approach. The heat exchanger problem was supposed to be fixed, but theoretically they could have run into a similar problem.

Please correct me if I'm reading this wrong, but from looking at the maps posted, it appears to me it went missing pretty early into the flight yes? If that is the case, they must have known it's been missing longer then they are saying, or am I reading the maps wrong?

The way I'm looking at them, it looks like they were only a hour or so into the flight

Flightradar24 has MH370 the plane in question landed at Beijing Airport with slight delay.

Planefinder doesn't even recognize flight MH370
