That link is a list of all slaves imported into the Americas, and almost all of them went to Latin America.

Ever wonder what happened to all the slaves brought into Mexico? Where is their black population?

Into the US, only 500,000 from 1619-1807, after which time importing slaves was banned in the US. All those millions went to what is now known as latin America. So no where near millions after US was founded as a country.

Millions of slaves were imported into British colonies at that time.

So yeah, you are wrong.

The industrial revolution had been going on for centuries, and Britain was ahead of the game, but around 1850 the US took over.

So your little tirade to bash the colonists is all based on lies. You want to give all the credit to immigrants, and that is also not correct, and a cheap shot.

All you need to know about the Industrial Revolution:-

en.wikipedia.org...

en.wikipedia.org...

The US was YEARS behind Britain.
In fact Britain was using Steam Power 100 years before the US. The US where still using horses.

I don't know how this turned into a US verses Brit discussion, but I will add that the Battle of New Orleans pretty much changed Britain's attitude about landing troops in the US forever after, it being such a lopsided victory for the US.

You won a battle youd didnt win a war!

The Brits did convince Mexico that they could take Texas, and they had eyes for New Orleans, so Mexico attacked the US, and got their clocks cleaned, they were straight up embarrassed.

Again a battle not a war!

poet1b
Britain supported the Southern slavers during the civil war, and we got a Brit on here slamming us on slavery, but they dared not land troops. Russia had our backs against Britain at that time,

I wasnt slamming slavery Just pointed out that Black slaves made up the numbers of early Americans. I wasn't debating the ins and outs of slavery

poet1b
but I think the memory of New Orleans was the real reason they stayed out of things.

Awww look at the silly American that cant understand the diffrence between Battles and wars.

Lets break this down into simple points shall we.
1) Doesn't matter if it was 100 million black slaves or 1000 black slaves. Fact was early America had a somewhat sizable black slave population. You don't recognize the decedents of the original blacks slaves as American?
2) I was not giving all " the credit to immigrants" if you had bothered to READ I was giving them equal credit and recognized that that the first colonists also contributed equal value.

If you noticed what I said:

crazyewok

A LOT of people built America from the Natives , the original colonists, slaves and later immigrants. ALL had a equal part and brought different skills and contributions to the table. Deal with it.

I never ignored the contributions of the original colonists only pointed out that everyone brought something to the table.
3) Yes Britain was ahead of the Industrial revolution. IT STARTED HERE! And it was European immigrants with there knowledge that brought it to the USA! If it started in Europe first then someone had to have brought it to America!

4) No USA did not overtake in 1850, your country was in a wreck . Try 1900s + And that's being generous. I would say it was neck and neck to about world war I And as a superpower the USA didn't become number one until WW2

Ok, this madness has gone on too long and no one is getting anywhere.

Here is a fair summery:

Americans are a different culture, and this culture has a crap ton of respect for their flag (still seems silly to me but hey)
British do not understand this and see it as very very ..... very silly.

The vet committed a crime and that was wrong of him, but I guess the flags could have been flown properly if you're in a country that puts so much hope into a flag...

Still, the way the Vet handled that situation is literally why the rest of the world think Americans don't give a crap about anyone.

It funny the stereotype of us Brits is uptight and anal. But it seems us Brits are the most light hearted and more willing to jest

Haha stereotypes don't always hold true!

I think we are one of the few cultures that literally mock everything, including ourselves aha

That shouldn't even be a stereotype for Brits, that should just be a global delicacy.

Nothing beats scones and tea when you're chilling out in front of the tele.

Great summarisation.

The real things that epitomise a Brit; the ability to see humour in ANY given situation, the art of self-deprecation and extracting the urine.

The Aussies sort of get it.....but no-one seems to come close to it.

By the way I think this is all actually on topic.

I mean it highlighting how different cultures express patriotism in different way.

Here we have a prime example of Brits showing patriotism.

Notice how different Brits who don't all way agree on other threads are backing each other up against foreign attack and have taken advantage of divided American opinion.

Just a couple thoughts to add here on this? I think you really hit why there is such a difference in attitude and respect or the lack of respect for the flag between Britain and the Americans.

Britain has a rich, deep and long history with distinct culture and identity which no one, anywhere, can question as existing and being what it is. How good or bad periods may have been are highly debatable, but the fact you HAVE a continuous history to reflect on, isn't.

By contrast, we can't even claim all our own time on this continent. North America was alternately pillaged and pummeled by Spain, France, the Dutch (they were nice anyway), the Portuguese and of course..the British. That, all before we even decided to become a nation toward the end of the international free-for-all dog pile across the North and South of the new lands.

We love and cherish our flag, in part, because we have damn little else to cherish for true cultural symbol and meaning...and it's a situation unique to America in many ways by comparison with most other major world powers.

It's almost sad and pathetic to put that way, but it's also true and accurate IMO, so what can we do?
