I just know this due to conversations with military people both retired and active. Much of US training is on stand down so as to prepare Aircraft, Tanks, Ships for deployment to war. Nuclear weapons being dusted off and tested for readiness. US preparing for worst if not a an actual response.
# just got real on this side of the pond for real for real last 12-24 hours. Things that have long been quiet are being woke up over here.
To be honest with you that is pretty normal anytime there are heightened tensions anywhere in the world. We went on yellow alert one night because the then leader of the Soviet Union went to the Black Sea which was considered uncharacteristic of him due to the time frame. Russia has always gotten our military leaders stirred up due to their nuclear capabilities/// At least I hope that is all there is to it !
Your correct but civilians are often not aware of what happens in these situations. I can say though that some assets that have been stowed for a good long while are being awakened that are not part of the regular drum ups to war like versus Terrorists. what's going on now is more akin to what a heighten alert would have been 27-30 years ago VS Soviet Union.
We may not be playing chess but we are setting up the board to play with our Army men.

This was largely expected, and the path of aircraft carrier into the Mediterranean was known well in advance. As of late last week, this is what was known about the distribution of US naval forces around the world (Source: Stratfor).
It is not known is if the report by Sevastopol News that the two US warships have already crossed the bosphorus and would arrive at the Crimean port shortly is real or fake. From the website:
The U.S. Navy will arrive in Sevastopol in four hours? As we have just learned from unofficial sources in the Naval Forces of Ukraine, headed for the shores of Sevastopol at full speed, are two ships of the United States Navy.
According to preliminary information, two destroyers carrier battle groups have already passed the Bosphorus.
Recall that part of the Black Sea Fleet warships are now off the coast of Sochi. Yesterday, a large landing ship "Kaliningrad" from the Baltic Fleet entered the Black Sea. And as we have previously reported, to Sevastopol is returning the Ukrainian frigate "Hetman Sahaidachny."
There has been no official comment.
Of the above, the most important unknown is whether indeed the US is entering the black sea in what would be a direct confrontation with the Russian fleet. Considering the earlier report of the defection of the Ukranian navy head, this would not be surprising as the US would certainly need naval presence in the waters close to the Crimean, especially following the report that the Crimean PM just announced the creation of a regional - i..e, non-Ukraine - navy.
Those who wish to do so can keep track of the status of CVN-77 George H.W. Bush on its facebook page located here.
Alternatively, a good place to keep track of who crosses in and out of the Black Sea is the Bosphorus Naval News.

What struck me at this time of tension, is that the Next king of England and his wife and son our doing a tour of NZ. and Aussie. far away from any action if the hostilities start .Interesting timing? Or maybe coincidence.
United States — U.S. president George W. Bush's statement to Russia was: "Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century."[345] "Russia has invaded a sovereign neighbouring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people," said Mr Bush. "Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century." [346] The US Embassy in Georgia, describing the Matthew Bryza press-conference, called the war an "incursion by one of the world's strongest powers to destroy the democratically elected government of a smaller neighbor".[347] Initially the Bush Administration considered a military response to defend Georgia, but such an intervention was ruled out due to the inevitable conflict it would lead to with Russia.[348][349] Instead, Bush opted for a softer option by sending humanitarian supplies to Georgia by military, rather than civilian, aircraft.[348][349]

March 3, 2014 -- (TRN) -- In response to a Russian invasion, the United States has sent an aircraft carrier strike group toward the Black Sea to be able to respond to developments on the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine. The super-carrier USS George H.W. Bush plus seventeen other ships and three submarines passed through the Aegean sea this afternoon. The George H.W. Bush is carrying 90 aircraft including helicopters of various types, and several squadron's of F-22 Raptors, the most advanced combat aircraft in the world. The submarines each have twenty four missile silos, with each silo housing a missile armed with eight separate nuclear warheads which operate as MIRV's (Multiple Independent Re-Entry Vehicles) that can be independently targeted.

The George H.W. Bush is the first and only aircraft carrier in the world that has successfully sea-launched and landed an unmanned X-47b Stealth Drone which can be used for long term surveillance or for offensive attacks.
The number of ships accompanying the George H.W. Bush in this strike group is significant: 17 ships and 3 submarines.
Aircraft carrier Strike Groups are assembled as-needed so there is no particular number of accompanying vessels. However, the graphic below gives readers a sense of the types of vessels that accompany a U.S. Carrier which is being sent into battle
