More than 2 dozen veterans groups supported this legislation that would help veterans with education, health benefits, and ease the backlog on processing claims with the veterans administration. The VA has a backlog of approx. 390,000 claims that have been delayed for 125 days or more. Some of this money would be used to get those benefits out to our veterans who have served our country. The Republicans said that it would cost too much, and they had to control spending. Every Democrat voted for it, 1 abstained from voting, while all of the Republican senators (except for 2) voted against it, with 2 abstained from voting.
The Republicans want to give tax breaks to the wealthy, but not help out our returning veterans...(I have seen picture of flags waving on FOX NEWS in the backround, so they should have been 100% in favor of this)...I keep seeing those "Wounded Warriors" commercials on TV, asking the "common joe" for donations of whatever they can spare. there have been many veterans that go on the various talk shows, pleading for the public to call their congressmen to pass legislation that would provide more funds. So, what happened?....well, the (supposedly nasty socialist) Democrats, heard them loud and clear, and drafted legislation to help, and "when the rubber hit the road", those flag waving, patriotic, Republicans told our veterans to "kiss off, you cost too much"
here's the article:
www.washingtonpost.com... .html
here's the list state by state on how they voted, just in case you would like to thank them, for not "wasting taxpayer dollars" (sarcasm)

One of their other excuses was that it didn't include an amendment for sanctions on Iran...huh?... what the hell does that have to do with helping vets. also, what happened to the Tea Party vote? aren't those the same people that keeps calling democrats un-American?

i honestly wish i could say i am surprised at this. they go on and on about "support our troops" yet when push comes to shove they screw these same servicemen and women, who put their lives on the line to fight the wars these same people start.

i have a relative that was injured in Iraq. they suffered a permanent painful injury due to the INCOMPETENCE of another American serviceman. first they had issues just getting out because of this injury since it is not an obvious one that can be seen looking at them. then even after they finally got out, they then had to FIGHT to get the benefits they were OWED, due to the fact they had just gotten back from a patrol when the accident happened. and because of the SPOT the accident happened they claimed that they had "returned" from said patrol, even tho they were still on their transport and barely inside the base. on top of all that they then siced JAG on him to find some sort of wrongdoing so they could give him a "bad conduct discharge" (they failed to find anything). i rather suspect this was all done to "save money" by not having to pay them what they were due.

but i guess the military prefers to spend out their butts for expensive toys that may not even work than to deal with THOSE THAT PUT THEMSELVES IN HARMS WAY fairly. so is it any surprise that the government would treat them any fairer? not really. just look at the "ALL ex servicemen have mental problems and should not be able to own guns" comment the other day. that right there should show the servicemen exactly how valued they are to the government. it would be interesting to see the military "go on strike" over this. what could the government really do if most servicemen went on strike? rather hard to nail them all with desertion at that point.

The GOP is self destructing. They have no platform other than "were not Obama" and the RNC has broken into ideological factions with the Christian Right calling all the shots.

It's almost as if they want to lose elections because they enjoy the underdog status and are just content to whine.

There are some good, reasonable Republican candidates that could win elections but the GOP prefers hyperbolic losers.

They had a chance to take back control with Dr. Paul but they went with Romney...........lol....what's that tell you?

I am quite sure this information is making the rounds through American Legion Posts, I know when crap like this happens word travels fast in the Canadian Legion. We really need to bitch slap these people out of office, the problem is that you only have two choices of the same poison, three in Canada. The entire system needs a complete overhaul.

Cheers - Dave

plus, look at all the states that have complete republican control, they are cutting off tax dollars, that would go to help the poor and middle class. and somehow this is supposed to prudent? more breaks for corporations and wealthy, the rest of the "great unwashed" are on their own.

the reasonable republicans that could work with democrats to move this country forward, are not going to be running in the 2014 congressional elections. so if they get control of the senate, Obama might as well get ready for impeachment proceedings, because that is all the congress will be doing from 2014 to 2016

thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c113:S.1982:

If one reads the actual bill it looks like feel good legislation. Being a disabled combat vet I have no problem with this bill passing or not. Most folks understand that Vets are considered a financial liability by the Government after they have served their purpose. If they actually gave a crap they would close all VA Medical facilities thereby giving Vets access to the private sector who would in turn simply bill the VA. That would save and enormous amount of money as well as the option of QUALITY health care vs the utter crap one gets from the VA. It is also NOT FREE. If you have health insurance they will be billed and you will pay the difference. If you make over a certain amount you will be billed. With respect to disability claims the VA is NOT your friend. You join the DAV who advocate on your behalf.

" Oh right, I forgot... you can only bash Obama ,liberals and democrats " How have you come to this questionable conclusion ?
Any vet I have met at the hospital are all very very pissed off with the government, be they Dem or Rep. Now I'm rambling.
My anger has a tendency to override tempered rational thought. I suspect you haven't read the Bill. It's just politics and either way would have little to no impact on the end user. Again, after you have done THEIR dirty work you are viewed as a big red dollar sign by BOTH sides.

the house right now should be working with the senate designing some legislation to help those troops coming home from Afghanistan later this year with job training and education programs. tens of thousands of troops will need to find employment, but being an election year, ""fugitabouit""

the sad thing about this latest veteran kiss-off by republicans, is that this isn't the first time, here's some earlier legislation that was also stopped by republicans
this one from Sept. 2012

and here is a list of more of these vetoes and cuts since Obama took office

they love the troops when they go to war, but when they come home, or try and take care of their families while they are overseas. the republicans say "sorry, you cost too much, you're on your own"

They have made it clear that they will do nothing for the little people and everything for their rich cronies. The vets put more st risk than their rich cronies did. I'll bet if there was a military equipment contract with the usual kickbacks they would be all over it.

Didn't you get the memo? It's just because you are jealous and lazy. All you need to do is pull yourself up by the bootstraps...work hard and you too can be one of those obscenely wealthy folks that get massive tax breaks.

As for the veterans....this is how your country REALLY values your service. Merica #1.

It's the same with kids. The Republicans whitter on endlessly about protecting the unborn, but as soon as those kids ARE born then they want nothing more to do with them. Food stamps? Pah - let them eat cake!

You will also find that many of the GOP run states receive the most federal aid. Yes that's right the spend crazy liberals have to prop up the conservative states. So much for self responsibility that the GOP preaches. And the GOP expects to take control of the Senate and the House after the next election.

I don't blame them and I am a veteran. When the Post 9-11 bill passed, altering how education benefits were paid out, it was outrageous and unsustainable. While I believe we should have some benefits for those who have volunteered, they shouldn't be able to loot the treasury.

It is a game and even after fulfilling ones commitment in the military, we are still used as political fodder by all sides.

And who was it for the last 6 years, and the last 60 years have consistently gutted defense, and veterans benefits ?

WHO WAS IT ?

Wasn't the GOP it was their opposites.

Have fun with the dogma, and thinking the left cares about veterans.

They don't.

Hell both left wing, and right wing have CONSISTENTLY treated veterans like crap.

Figures TN voted Nay, both republican. They also voted that it was OK for overseas contract workers to rape and not hold them responsible.

I've heard Corker speak at a town meeting. Waste of time, total politician, says one thing but does another. Plenty of Vets at the town meeting, hopefully they wont vote for him.
