'We're Not Laughing Anymore,' Says EU Commissioner On Relations With Russia

he European Union's enlargement commissioner, Stefan Fuele, says the EU has contributed to the current conflict in Ukraine by "failing" to understand Russian President Vladimir Putin's past statements about the legacy of the U.S.S.R.

"We didn't take seriously the message that President Putin sent to us when he said a couple of years ago that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was the biggest catastrophe of the 20th century," said Fuele in an interview at RFE/RL's Prague headquarters.

"At the 2008 Bucharest NATO-Russia summit, I was in the room when Putin said Ukraine was an 'artificial country,'" Fuele added. "Half of us laughed, half of us didn't understand. But we do understand now. We're not laughing anymore."

Russia has also been linked to deadly violence in Ukraine's Euromaidan protests, which began after then President Viktor Yanukovych scuppered a key EU integration deal, under apparent pressure from Moscow.

Just out of curiosity what would you (or anyone who is supporting Russia) think should Russia cross the border?
Would you accept / support it? Condemn it?

We've had so many of these 'possible invasion' warnings that I take them with a pinch of salt.

Not sure yet, I for one do not think the current government is legitimate and is fit to lead Ukraine, the actions it took so far has been questionable at best.

There is clearly an offensive agains Russia, this has been clear for me from the start ( my personal opinion ). They have every right to act if it feels threatened, every nation does.

But then again Russia isn't the answer.

Somehow I would rather see it in the hands of the Russians then seeing Ukraine succumbed by the Western banker elite.

But it's the Ukrainians you should be asking

As for significance -
I would think it will allow Russia to drive across East / South Ukraine. Russian forces in Crimea and in Transnistria could also cross the border, creating an area that would allow Russia to not only take the 2 regions in question, it would allow them to also consolidate any gains quickly.

it allows them flexibility with their military resources. being able to shift / pivot from 3 sides.

It would also allow them to trap Ukrainianian units should one of the thrusts breaks thru a line and link up with other Russian units. It would allow them to approach from the black sea as well (we had reports sometime back of a naval shore military speculation).

It also could force Ukraine to position units to meet / block an invading force. Its also possible the information is bogus and is intended to get Ukraine to position forces into areas the Russians have no intention of advancing from.

The other option is to use those areas initially and then drive across the eastern border and take Kiev, delivering a political knock out.

Take a look at the map of the area again and take into account that the troop movements I was mentioning earlier took place in Gukovo, Novoshastinsk and Lysogorka at the same time. And Taganrog along the coast towards Mariupol...

Along the highway that enters Ukraine at the border point at Dolzhanski, that, if I recall correctly, is held by separatists. And along the same highway, in Russia, we have Novoshastinsk, were Russian troop movements were reported and filmed a few weeks back.

If Russia were to invade it is the perfect area to go in from because they could essentially take the whole of South Ukraine and into Transnistria. Interesting.

Would this somehow be related to those other two threads talking about massive aircraft movement?

I don't think so. Those aircraft movements took place in Crimea and could be related to the announced visit of Putin in Crimea, on 9th May, after the Red Square parade.

I was talking about the troop movements filmed and also posted here a few weeks back.

I would not like Russia to get involved with its military and it would be good if they do not.
As is, I believe that resistance forces are quite capable to handle National Guard/special forces.
But if Kiev decide to use a full on scale attack such was the one in Georgia, civilians death toll would be too high and Russia would get involved. Rightfully so in my opinion.
The more important issue here is what exactly Kiev is going to achieve with this ATO nonsense?
This is not a bunch of people standing against Junta, this is now a whole resistance movement we are talking about,
more and more towns are disobeying Kiev. How can military operation against its own people be a solution?
It never works, quite contrary. They are pushing country into total civil war, a complete mess.
And as I said before I do not know if they are doing this intentionally under the influence of US in order to destabilize Russia like a typical puppet government or they are out of touch with their perception. I believe first option is closer to truth.
