A research team led by Jason Twamley, a researcher in the theoretical physics of quantum science and technology at Japan’s Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), has successfully demonstrated levitation without using any external energy source. The team developed a new material to achieve this feat, which has opened the doors to gravity-free technology in the future.

We are all reminded of the dogmatic views some people have when they say levitation without using any external energy source is impossible or that anti-gravity propulsion systems are a figment of the imagination of conspiracy theorists. New technologies are always developed and as the article says it could open the door to gravity-free technologies in the future and who knows one day we may discover a range of other materials having properties we cant even imagine.

Helium balloons are an example of anti-gravity without an external energy source.

Hot air balloons have internal energy sources.

Nah. It's not what they use in exotic propulsion systems.

Helium balloons are not "an example of anti-gravity" of any sort.

Helium balloons, like boats on the water (or more precisely, submarines in the water), rely on buoyancy, not anti-gravity.

To the extent that buoyancy is a function of volume displacing a greater mass than the weight of the craft, both balloons and ships depend directly on gravity.

Helium is less dense than air and that's why helium balloons float in air.

What exactly is supposed to be new or revolutionary about this? It has been long known that you can float pencil lead (graphite) on rare earth magnets. According to the linked article, that is all this is.

Edit: You can buy it as a kit for $50 USD.

Doesn't that kit picture look very much like the photo in the linked article?

China is just gonna come in and steal the damn tech now

Already known technology. The science kit I linked to above is probably made in China.

Good point and nice find.

And aren't rare earth magnets technically an external energy source?

Grebennikov wrote detailed accounts of his experiences flying over the Russian countryside using his levitation device. These flying experiences as well as his reported observations of other paranormal phenomena, usually involving insect nests or parts, appear in his self-published book My World (Moi Mir. Novosibirsk, Russia: Sovetskaya Sibir, 1997).

Do you accept he created a levitation device and was flying over the Russian countryside? Is there any evidence of this claim like people who probably saw him flying with his device or any photograph?

Article says energy is needed over time.

Article specifies "in a vacuum"…

Helium balloons are an example of anti-gravity without an external energy source.

So is hydrostatic upthrust, as demonstrated by anything that floats in water.

A careful reading of the linked article also reveals that the levitation in the reported case is achieved by minimising energy loss from the system – but energy is still needed, and still lost from the system, though slowly.

Defying gravity without the expense of energy is contrary to the basic laws of nature.

There are videos out there of him operating that device , I first cane across him many years ago in a thread on here where they were discussing personal flying devices like the jet pack and the follow on that looks like a garbage bin that the military bought the plans and used the engine for a cruz missile , as to whether he did it or not ? But viktors seem to be good at flying devices www.gaia.com...

Umm...[snore]...Zzzzz

Old news. Done many times previously.

Not sure why/who thought this was news worthy.

Whoever they are I have a news item for them: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Not the same way though.

It's worth the attention and a thread.

Yes, the same and many times over.

If you have been on ATS a long time, and have been paying attention, you know there is no such thing as a free lunch.
You understand the Laws of Thermodynamics and realize that science is your friend.

Countless free energy devices and spinning magnetic perpetual motion nonsense have moved through here.

If there is a substantial change to these Laws, it will only happen by passing successfully through the Gauntlet of science, mathematics and physics.

In this case, the rare earth magnets could be considered part of the antigravity device as without them it doesn't work.

I have ordered one from China. $25 USD. Several versions and parts are available on eBay. They are sold as a desk top toy.
