No confusion on my end, the issues of the time were deplorable and downright racist in spades, there is no two ways about that fact.

The confusion is that you fail to acknowledge the things that were good about that time. I acknowledge the racism; why can you not acknowledge the simpler life those not afflicted by racism had? Do you really believe that racism is a requirement for people to live in peace?

No one is advocating a return to racism. We are advocating a return to a more peaceful society.

If you were to go back to times like those coloured people and native americans would not live, work, and play alongside each other.

I have not said otherwise. In fact, I agree completely and said so.

Hence it's a poor example of times to which your nation would ever wish to return, which is kind of my point, and the premise of the thread far as i can establish.

So you prefer a loss of interpersonal relationships, violent and rampant crime, increasing poverty, and shootings in schools? And you are stating that all of those are required to not have racism?

Honestly, as much as the concept turns my stomach, I cannot say given those two choices that I would still choose today's society. Is it your desire to try and make racism less despicable?

I am sorry to inform all of you but there is no prairie to put your little house on. A certain Mr Gates has bought all the prairie up and he wont let you put your little house on any of it.

Bill Gates hasn't bought my little house. It might not be a prairie, but it is certainly sparsely populated and not given to modern standards of society.

What is it that you believe has been lost, that is "missing" in your/our live(s)?

Can you name it?

How did "technology" cause whatever "it" is banish it?

If you can answer these questions, at least as they apply to you, personally, you have at least the beginning of the answer you seek.

If you cannot answer these questions, you lost nothing.

You're merely frightened by the uncertainties of what the future might hold.

Morality.

We as a country have lost that.

So time for the cycle to turn from "Weak men make hard times" to "Hard times make strong men."

I'm looking forward to it.

BS. All the issues of our society are linked to our ever present morality. That’s what paralyzed our society. We feel our morality should br observed by our neighbors and have allowed many generations of our leaders to learn from and take advantage of this.

It's going to be nothing like Little House on the Prairie.

Get prepared, do your research, practice dry runs.

Unless you do it, you don't know how to do it. That simple.

Start fires from flint and from sticks. Gather water using a tarp and a rock, or by digging holes near ferns. Learn your plants, go out identify and eat them, let your system get used to it. Build practice shelters of all types. Learn the terrain you occupy and where to go and where you CAN occupy. Become familiar with your chosen weapons, practice constantly. Learn to set snares and figure 4 traps, etc. Learn about the game in your area and their habits. Learn orienteering and other directional aids. Learn Morse Code. Learn, learn, learn....

Do all this and more and you may stand a chance.

Very few of us will be able to stay put. I'm on 40 acres and 50 miles from the nearest town, but I still have a bugout plan, just in case.

No one is going to help you get there on this thread, you have to do the homework and footwork on your own. Just like you'll have to do when SHTF.

Damn! Accept for the distance to the nearest town, we live parallel lives! I've been rather lax on what I can produce in my garden area though, except making beer, wine, moonshine, tobacco and cannabis products like I have for the past 5 plus years.

What im saying is plain and simple TheRedneck aka going back to such times as depicted in the likes of "Little House On The Prairie" is simply a bad idea.

I acknowledge the racism; why can you not acknowledge the simpler life those not afflicted by racism had?

Because racism is wrong no matter how you wish to coat it in nostalgia and sentimentality for the past.

Do you really believe that racism is a requirement for people to live in peace?

No, nor have i suggested such.

So you prefer a loss of interpersonal relationships, violent and rampant crime, increasing poverty, and shootings in schools?

What do any of those things go to do with past history reeking of racism and colonialism?

And you are stating that all of those are required to not have racism?

You cannot put words in my mouth TheRedneck, point to where i have suggested anything of the sort please?

Is it your desire to try and make racism less despicable?

I wish to see it eradicated and you won't do anything of the sort by returning to the times depicted in the likes of "Little House On The Prairie", that's a given.

Why be afraid when it may be a good thing to return to little house in the prairie

The title of the thread would seem to state as to what the OP is advocation towards.

I have come to the conclusion that humans are not living as they were designed (or for the Darwin crowd, 'adapted') to live.

I believe that we are meant to be at least semi-nomadic by following the seasons and game migrations. We should be gathering wild foods as much as anything we cultivate. We should be generalists in that we should be able to craft anything that we need and be able to store food without electricity. There may be a few specialists that have a talent for certain things, but everyone should know how to live as a natural human. It would be like the cell organizations that have cells that contain all of the knowledge needed for survival in each individual cell. Nature can provide everything we need if we know where and when to find it and how to use it. We're talking more of a fur trapper or mountain man existence, but still it has worked for thousands of years.

The "civilized" urban/suburban dwellers that have specialized in their careers and rely on the system to survive will die sooner rather than later when the system collapses. The "easy" life will end and those who have to catch up to the survivor culture to get back to these basics will be lucky to make the transition to a "Little House" lifestyle.

If it comes down to a scenario like "The Road" (which was unrealistic in my opinion) or "Book of Eli" or "Road Warriors" (also unrealistic in my opinion), then it would be a good day to die with the rest of them. "The Day After" made for TV movie was the most realistic scenario in my mind, so get used to dying of radiation sickness or some new biological weapons within a few weeks of surviving the collapse and WWIII that follows.

I'm looking forward to exactly that.

Got my mule. Got a couple of good saddles. Looking for a pack donkey.

Plugged into a small community of people who know how to live that way. Developing relationships and learning to be a productive, useful part of that community.

I told my wife just this evening that I'd rather starve to death out in the mountains than live a slave in a prison without walls. (Though I don't foresee starving as a necessary outcome.) She understands. She even agrees in principle, but I think the reality scares her.

Me? I'm almost a bit excited about the prospect.

Let her rip!

Sorry to say , but you are out of your mind. I don't know anyone who would be capable of these things or even begin to comprehend how to do this. Also , it helps if your in Alaska or somewhere more northern and rural vs the hot south. We are pampered and sheltered from birth . Brought up to shop for food and work hard for a living in some 9-5 job. I rarely see a national park and when I do I drive there and back. I stay on the paths and take photos.
I'm disconnected from nature and how to survive in nature at all levels and so are my loved ones.
If SHTF we are dead.

Everyone here knows I'm out of my mind, lol.

Just telling it like it is.

In a true ELE or SHTF scenario you won't be shopping for anything and if there's no power, sh#t will get real in a hurry.

Everyone has a unique situation, there is no one size fit's all. There is survival. In your case, if you can't bugout, then maybe concentrate on having essential supplies on hand for an extended period. More of a prepper situation, but most people combine the two so they're ready for both scenarios.

Maybe google urban survival and guerilla gardening, I'm sure there's plenty there for your situation, but every person or family will have a unique set of circumstances to deal with, there is no one size fits all.

Right. And you dont' think that during a crisis situation the first thing raided is gardens and food pantries ? It's totally unrealistic IMO. We are screwed if anything bad happens.

I think the hardest thing in a shtf scenario is surviving against the masses of assholes who will become lawless as soon as it happens

Ive wanted to leave the city in Glasgow and go to a uninhabited scottish island and live there farming and surviving
or even just up the highlands , take over an abandoned castle or something

just need to out survive all the lawless assholes first
i guess it will be easier in scotland since the populations isnt near anywhere that of some US cities

Exactly! We will be screwed for that reason mainly. It will be like a horde of zombies attacking during The Purge.

Because racism is wrong no matter how you wish to coat it in nostalgia and sentimentality for the past.

You know, I honestly don't know how to respond to this. You are literally arguing with me over my agreeing with you!

No, nor have i suggested such.

Yes, you have, and yes, you are. Simply by refusing to admit that more happened in the past than racism, and that some of it might have been good and unrelated to racism.

What do any of those things go to do with past history reeking of racism and colonialism?

They are a reversal of the good things from the past.

You cannot put words in my mouth TheRedneck, point to where i have suggested anything of the sort please?

I am not putting anything in your mouth; your own posts do that. Your continued refusal to accept that anything good could have happened in the past because of something bad that also happened in the past indicates you associate the two together.

As a matter of fact, no one in this thread even brought up racism before you tried to make it the main point.

I wish to see it eradicated

You need to define "eradicated" to me. I thought it meant getting rid of it. We've pretty much done that. You must be expecting something more.

The title of the thread would seem to state as to what the OP is advocation towards.

A return to a simpler time?

Is saying hello to your neighbors racist? Is minding one's own business racist? Is actually taking time to be a parent racist? Is providing for oneself racist? Is respecting others racist?

I honestly have no idea what you are on about here. Do you even know what racism is? Could you let me in on it? Because we must be talking about two different things.

What im on about is plainly clear TheRedneck.

Going back to such times when racism and colonialism ran rampant in your county.

Aka like those depicted in the likes of "Little House On the Prairie" is simply a no'no and terrible idea.

No matter which way you care to spell it or coat the ideologies in sentiment.

The past was a terrible place to exist in the USA, especially if you were anything but white, if in doubt ask whats left of the indigenous population destroyed or the poor colored people who we enslaved and persecuted.

Simple as that really.

And i hope that clears up the matter because your history is what it is, the same as in my own nation.

And I am done trying to explain things to you.

Through rose-colored glasses or so it seems.

And i don't require your explanations, again history is what it is.

Neither were you, what you cannot compete with is the fact that racism and colonialism ran rampant back in the 1800s.

Going back to such time anything reminiscent of the sort is not going to bode well for anyone that's not a white supremacist far as i can establish.

You really are clueless, aren't you?

My family history goes back well beyond those years. I have letters penned by family members from that time that tell me exactly what was going on, in the handwriting of those who literally lived through it. Even today, much of the same social traditions that marked that era live on right here, with the notable exception of... wait for it... slavery and racism!

My first schoolhouse was burned to the ground during my first (1st-2nd grade) summer. Why? Because my first grade class was the first one that was integrated.

You really think I know what I know about that era just from reading books and watching TV dramatizations?

And methinks you are unable to accept the fact of the matter aka colonisation of your nation was not exacly a walk in the park for people of the indigenous sorts or those that happened to be black.

My lineage includes Cherokee and Creek. Those, in case you missed reading that chapter, are indigenous tribes. The Trail of Tears runs less than 5 miles from my house.

No direct info on any black heritage, but I do have genetic markings that indicate some lineage from a group called the Black Dutch, a group of black and Dutch settlers who lived in almost total exile in the area of West Virginia/eastern Kentucky. They had a lot of interbreeding between the two races, so there is a strong possibility that there is some black lineage in there.

And here you are lecturing ME of all people about how badly the natives and blacks were treated... worse, in a thread that isn't even about that!

Check your privilege.

Neither were you, what you cannot compete with is the fact that racism and colonialism ran rampant.

I'm not competing with anything. I simply said that there were some good things about life back then, at least for most. The fact that some groups were denied that does not mean it didn't exist for others, nor does it mean it cannot be extended to others.

My neighbors are a motley mix of black and white, and all are treated the same as anyone else. That is not going to change. Live with that.

Going back to such time anything reminiscent of the sort is not going to bode well for anyone that's not a white supremacist far as i can establish.

I'm not supporting nor disputing your issues with U.S. history or how it is portrayed in books like the Little House series, however, race, religion, sexual preference, and any other aspect of these post modern concerns will go right out the window when your survival and the survival of your circle of family and friends becomes the only concern anyone will have.

Your opinion of race may change when you get a taste for human flesh as some will like dark meat better than white, but then again, I don't think that will come up as an issue when you are starving to death and dying of radiation sickness or the next bio-weapons that get released. Morality will be the first thing to go extinct, just before human beings do.

IMO what has been a normal life in the 19th century and before is everything was home cooked without artificial preservatives and chemicals.

IMO what has been a normal life in the 20st century and after is everything is filled with artificial preservatives and chemicals.

I have chickens for eggs and meat. Free range/feed.
I have goats for milk/cheese and meat. Free range/feed.
This is so I know where my meat is from and what is fed.
Only 3 acres I live on surrounded by woodland.
Fortunately I have a well with very good water.

I also live in the country side.

I use flight tracker to monitor aircraft in my skies.

Canine security system. Mine and all the neighbors within gunshot sound range.

Hi I'm Gen X, now get the phuk out.

It sounds cold and like false bravado, but I think there are way too many good old boys sorta looking forward to that kind of action.

Nobody comes out here unless they know someone or they are looking for trouble. Even the dogs can recognize an unfamiliar vehicle five miles away. And will start their caterwauling the moment that vehicle hits the dirt road. In a SHTF scenario I fear for the innocent. But the thief, the saboteur, and those looking to bring trouble, not so much.

I look at the hearts of those that kill for self gain, and the hearts of those that will die for family and neighbor, and in my heart, I know who the winner will be.

I never called you a white supremacist i simply suggested going back to such times would not bode well for anyone that's not a white supremacist given the ideologies that were the colour of the day and the power structures in place.

As to intolerance, where have i shown intolerance?

Sugar-coating history or wishing it to repeat in the manner that it did is simply a bad idea which is perfectly evident to anyone that wishes to see.

Canny just go back and take what you assume to be all the good parts as life simply does not work like that.

i was coming from a place where i see the little house in the parier as existing in a place of a plurality in society and a social contract that kept things sane but we are losing all that very fast.

while its hard to compare here with the usa the striking thing for us all is how a tolerant liberal society fell on its own liberal sword during the pandemic and rose as totalitarianism especially when it looked like it was over.

the 2 camps have been evolving since the iraq war, made worse each election with one side or the other refusing to give consent to be governed by the other. again all made worse by covid authoritarianism.

our societies only work on that consent.. removing consent has changed the identity of many nations, its changed the meaning of patriotism, the thing with removing one layer is a deeper one replaces it, or nothing.

my neck of the woods and yours appear to be ones that won't change much as the deeper identity transcends the hollow ideological replacement of empires.

that's the other route i don't often mention that the usa rather than having a soviet fall or a british implosion wil like rome evolve from republic into empire
