When you say the 100% , are you in the "DOS" portion of the update or still in Windows ?
That is the perfect first question to have asked.

How much free space is left on your drive ?
The one thing most folks overlook .

During the update, the disk is at 100%

It takes forever to open or use any other anything, including the 'window' menu in the lower left

That's what I call when the system restarts and goes to the old screen with installing updates , please don't turn off your computer.

Not disk usage , 100% is sometimes normal .
The free space of the drive itself .
Open File Explorer and check free space on the drive.
If it is down to single digit gigabytes , time to free up space.
Time for the 32GB USB key / drive

Haven't read the whole thread but the best way to get rid of a corrupted windows update is to delete it.

C:Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download






Delete everything in the folder, reboot.

If you can't do that, start in safe mode and do it that way.

Actually, DTOM, I just thought of something else we should had tried straight away.

Windows has a built in disk cleanup utility. It's a one-stop-shop to locate lots of useless files, temporary stuff and remnants of installation files left behind, including old windows updates.

Perhaps a spring clean is all that's needed to get the update to install regularly. I thought of this when you mentioned that all your recent updates take hours to complete. I don't think the issue is necessarily with this update from hell, but with your laptop that's needs a detox treatment.

It's pretty much self explanatory and you can't break anything with it.

This little program is still my saviour on an old (2008) Windows Vista laptop that refuses to retire and I didn't know it's been hidden away in all windows version since then.

Sorry,, I keep forgetting thing... it's almost 4am here and way past my bedtime. Just one thing. Some updates can take hours to download and install. M$ usually release two BIG ONES.. spring/autumn. But, smaller security/driver updates shouldn't take more than half an hour, even on slow PCs. Solid state hard drives really help speed up the process.

We'll replace that laptop with Win11 and an SSD.
When I got my desktop, I did SSD, and it is faster and quieter.

Was just heading to fire up my PC, I'll be sure to postpone updates until this S#storm is sorted out. I'm glad I happened to open ATS and skimmed over the "New Threads" tab.

@Gothmog: I used to hunt down all my driver updates direct from the manufacturers. But a year ago, I subscribed to CCleaner Pro. I've been very impressed with the software... it takes care of all trackers & junk files, gives control over which programs run at launch, checks for program updates, has a very thorough uninstaller tool, and a bunch of other useful tools. A lot of it can be automated (ie: remove trackers, cookies, & temp files immediately upon closing your browser), or scheduled to run once a week, month, or whatever you want.

One of the newer features is a driver update tool. I've used it a couple times, and after investigating on the relevant manufacturer websites, it seems to have fetched & installed the correct ones each time.

I'm not on your level of knowledge, but I'm not a noob either, by a long shot. Most folks would probably say I'm some kind of a power user. I was hesitant to let a program take control of any of the under-the-hood stuff like drivers, etc. But my experience with CCleaner Pro has been nothing but positive. I wonder if you're familiar with it, and if so, I would be interested in hearing any thoughts you may have.

Ok, at least you have something to work with.

There are quite a few solutions in that tutorial. Have you started to go through them? I would try each one in turn, reboot and see what happens with the update. Rinse and repeating after trying each one.

I would try option 2, 3 and 7... my money is on the problem being in that proximity. Although, let's see if anyone else has a better suggestion...
