I'm not commenting on how alarmed (or not) you should be about Fukushima, however can you tell me why I should listen to a guy who works at an HIV clinic in Santa Barbara?

The guy's expertise is treating people with HIV and Infectious diseases - he has no more expertise in nuclear engineering than I do.

It seems he's just written a sensationalist piece for the local newspaper's website to promote a talk he was giving. I see no reason to take any notice of it.

I don't think anyone needs to be a nuclear engineer to understand Fukushima is a worldwide threat.

"sensationalist piece" you say?

Maybe it takes more people like the Dr. to wake the sleeping masses up.

Most people's eyes quickly glaze over when people like us talk about Fukushima, because their minds switch to thinking about Dancing With the Stars, or the next sporting event.

The masses don't want to hear anything bad, only when the event is hurting them directly, they can seen the physical manifestations, and death is eminent.

We are truly a society that practices "Blind Ignorance", but this time the consequences will be dire, if the world does not pull together and solve this global disaster.

Shutting down any reactor that is well maintained and regulated is dumb because they pose no threat. Fukushima was bad because you had TEPCO cutting corners, and not following regulations when they had to. Their planning was terrible and they should have known better but didn't. Nuclear power is vastly important for the human race, let's not forget that.

Actually, they all pose a threat because they turn survivable disasters into possible extinction level events. If you look back through history, there have been countless asteroid strikes and mega-tsunami's which the planet has recovered from in time. One of these disasters now would be a different story because there is high likelihood that multiple nuclear reactors would be obliterated. The planet is an unstable place, which is why nuclear power is a very bad idea.

These cancers can be prevented if children are given pills containing the non-radioactive isotope of iodine soon after exposure. These saturate the thyroid with safe iodine and stop it taking up the radioactive kind.

Not prevented, only avoided taking the pills does not stop the body from utilizing the radioactive iodine it only reduces the chance that it does, again its a simple dilution of the pollutant, in this case inside inside the body. Note also that not radioactive iodine will cause cancer it only has a great probability to do so... It is not black and white, 8 or 80.

You're not too far off. I recently came back from Chernobyl and learned a fair bit about the disaster there.

They are building a new sarcophagus to cover the damaged reactor and once the new one is moved into place and is secure then they are "breaking down the old sarcophagus". In order to that they are using cranes and I assume other remote controlled machinery to bring the old one down and to start gathering up the highly radioactive material at source.

With that collected they have said there is a new disposal site that can handle the highly radioactive waste.

You can find out a little bit here: BBC - Chernobyl.

I have some photos if anyone is interested.

I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.

I don't know, I just read a piece in Forbes that says the radiation leaked each day is equal the radiation present in the in the number of bananas consumed each day.

So relax it ain't that bad.

Not to get off topic, but has anyone considered that the elevation of consciousness for humanity or the ascension to a higher dimension, expected by some, may require a more radioactive environment, and the ones in charge are just making that happen. The ones that survive have just advanced.

you're not supposed to believe him, you're supposed to be awakened enough by his testimony, to go and research for yourself.

I'm not sure how you know what I'm supposed to do? I think I'm supposed to go and buy a ticket for his talk.

Even if I'm "awakened" I'm not sure how that changes the reality of Fukishima?

Aside from anything else the HIV doctor says "brink of a possible worldwide nuclear holocaust." - which makes me think he doesn't even know what the phrase means. This is what nuclear holocaust means:

Nuclear holocaust refers to a possible nearly complete annihilation of human civilization by nuclear warfare

Clearly this has nothing to do with Fukishima, and the guy is just an idiot making sensationalist remarks to sell tickets for some crappy lecture he's doing.

This guy should be seen as a planetary traitor - where was this concern 2.5 years ago? Anyone, and I mean anyone, who had ANY information or influence in this arena and did not speak up 1 hour after it happened is a planetary traitor.

I really mean that. The pocket protector scumbags who failed to keep the public discourse after hour 1 are planetary traitors. The fact the nearly all were to afraid of loosing their jobs to speak up loudly and often are guilty of selling out humanity for a few more years of paychecks.

Someone designed that system, purposefully put it in an earthquake zone, population center and tsunami zone. One man involved in its design quit because he viewed the thing as a planetary time bomb, yet pocket protector scumbags who feared for their jobs pushed on. BTW, they made damn sure to put THREE plants in such unstable areas, THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you know a nuclear scientists, SHUN THEM. Refuse to talk to them, refuse to help them with their children, refuse to feed them if you have the opportunity as they HATED YOU from day one - how else can you explain what they have done? They built something that in its current state has no solutions, only duct tape hacks - it was not the water that caused this it was the design.

They built something WITHOUT any solution to the endless tonnage of toxic waste. And more importantly, the entire reason they built these, the ENTIRE reason, was to make bombs to kill you with. They needed a way to process the material to kill you with. Shun these people now and forever, make sure they understand what they have done to Earth.

Those reactors were built in the 1960's. The US DofE encouraged the Japanese to choose American made reactors to prove that the designs were safe to the American public. All the engineers and regulators involved in the original design have already been decommissioned and are pushing up the daisies.

I worry what that water is going to do to the ice caps. Whether the radiation will heat up ice and make it melt or whether it will sink down into the ocean bed and heat up those methane gases.

I mean EVERY "scientist" involved in this now. If you go to Stanford and there is a nuke dude in line to get a drink - refuse service. They are all culpable, as the discourse on this problem over the last two years has been church quiet and this is SOLELY because these folks are frightened they might loose their job. Dead and suffering humans is a price they have to pay for import beer and faster internet service.

I recently read that GE was the company who built the reactor, and it was their choice to locate it where it is. Not sure how true this is.

I believe that humanity is standing on the brink of a possible worldwide nuclear holocaust. The world as we know it has already changed as the result of radioactive material that has been released into the air and the ocean.

I am not an alarmist, but I am alarmed.

I know that large quantities of radioactive material are in a precariously unstable situation in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility. An inability to effectively keep this material cool could easily result in another nuclear event. Another natural disaster like the recent typhoon or earthquake that occurred October 25, 2013, will further minimize the likelihood of a meaningful response.

I know that I don’t know all of the details, risks, and levels of radioactivity. I do know I have been exposed. I consumed Pacific Bluefin tuna (PBFT) caught off the coast of San Diego four weeks ago. A Stanford study has shown that all PBFT caught off the West Coast of California had 10 times the usual amount of radioactive cesium present prior to the Fukushima event in March 2011.

I believe that our health is the great equalizer. In my clinical career, I have had the good fortune to care for the homeless and the disenfranchised and the rich and the famous. When one is lying in a hospital bed with those special gowns that are wide open in the back, everyone is pretty much the same. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat are gifts of life for all of us no matter what our creed or our color.

I know that these precious gifts have been contaminated. The silence from the media and the powers that be has been deafening.

Source

So why is the media so very quiet on this subject? California is the breadbasket for much of America, with California contaminated, our food from California has the potential to kill us...

I have seen many many times, the comments of people such as "what can be done" and yes I understand exactly because this is overwhelming, how do we, poor little humans deal with radioactivity that is spreading in the ocean with food we eat, in the air the we breathe.

The real thing is there is something that can be done about it, what I can't tell as I am no nuclear radiation expert nor a nuclear physicist, but I can tell you that if we are to expose the true reality behind what is happening, with the real numbers behind the radioactivity amount. That being done, we then would need many team of experts on this kind of topic to work out a solution. Put a hundred scientist, a team of worker specialized in this area of expertise to find a solution and we would find it for sure.

No worry out there, ain't no problems, only solutions.

Hey man, you're being too unfair on those involved with the nuclear industry. Your anger should lie with the engineers OR executives who allowed the placement of these plants at those specific places. Not with every nuclear scientist or engineer. I work as an engineer in the UK nuclear industry and we've worked our arses off recently designing advanced anti-Fukishima style safety systems for reactors. We are trying to make the field as safe as we can - I promise you that.

Yes, there will always be individuals in ANY field who disregard life and earth. Look at the #ing world mate, open your eyes to the suffering and the wars and injustice. That's a result of human nature - this planet will die due to human 'nature', it will not die because of any specific one field of science. But regardless, your comments about not helping nuclear scientists children, shunning them, and saying they are destroying the Earth on purpose is extremely ignorant and narrow-minded. Let me put it in a way for you to understand;

NUCLEAR ENERGY IS HERE TO #ING STAY. I'm tired of the anti-nuclear bull# on here recently, you cannot stop this - GET OVER IT. Humans have discovered the nuclear world and we WILL use it. This is human nature. Once again, you CANNOT STOP IT. The problem isn't nuclear energy - we as humans have used EVERYTHING for good and bad. If it wasn't nuclear bombs itd be biological bombs with the same killing power, if it wasnt a nuclear plant accident it would've been a biological virus research centre... Do you understand?

We have been doing this from DAY 1. You are the type of person that thousands upon thousands of years ago you would've said: 'Shun these humans making fires! We don't need them! They make fire only to kill! Fire burn half our forest! Shun fire makers! Why do we need fire! We have the sun!!'

Its the same #ing principle mate. Look at us now, we carry fire in our pockets! But people like you would've rather we shunned fire from day 1. You understand now; innocent humans and our beautiful earth WILL always suffer from our escapades. We can't stop that, what we CAN do however as professional working humans is to ensure we improve the state of the fields we are working in - which is what I'm trying my hardest to do.

One day, just like we have condensed fire to a lighter and completely tamed it, the same will happen with nuclear energy and for all we know in 2000 years time people might be carrying mini-nuclear fusion reactors and energy supply would have been a problem of the ancients. You can't stop human nature, so do something to help rather than spread hate and anger. You change nothing like that except your own perception.

Singular humans have made decisions against the rest of the race since the dawn of man. The problem isn't the tool used, or the motif, or the field within it occurs - the problem lies with humans capability of lack of care or sympathy, or sometimes simply over-confidence.

I'm sorry for what happened in Fukishima and how the world is paying - I really am. It disheartens me strongly as someone in that field. People have suffered for reasons they don't understand, and given back to causes they'll never know since our inception. If it was meant to be different, it would've been. Next time you use a lighter or turn on your gas heating - think about the suffering, deaths and earthly damage done for those causes, and then think once again how little that bothers you now you have the finished product lol. Humans eh.

I've seen this banana comparison over the last year or so too but this does not even make sense. We're talking irradiated bananas (not organic), and that would mean the radioactivity stopped once they were irradiated. Throwing a bunch of bananas in the ocean is a secondary radiation - would probably cause some bubbles due to decomposition. I just don't see how this can be compared. But it is the story with the biggest play down for sure.

Not the bread basket sir that would be the central US, the Bible belt. However California grows a lot of our fruits and vegetables. They also produce milk. I don't eat or drink anything from the west coast as of 2011. I also do not eat seafood. The lame stream media won't touch it because I believe the majority of the planet would do the same. What would happen if 99% of the the USA just boycotted the west coast entirely?

what would happen???...this nation would go hungry?

Search this site for a thread on the Peachbottom plant done by someone who worked there.

As for "I am the person..." you are far too incorrect. You know that the nuclear energy industry was created as a ROUSE, a lie, a misdirection in order to get the human population to fund the creation of weapons material? The intended purpose all along was weapons, not steam/electrons - those are waste products. You know that at the top end those in charge cared nothing for the waste disposal from the start (collateral damage), only the creation of their weapons material? You know that the waste, which cannot be dealt with in a real way, has a WONDERFUL byproduct on the human population which cannot be undone at this point? Radiation (man made) makes it so much harder for a Human Being to project their energy through the body. And none of what I just said has anything to do with steam creation, or electrons, or the economy, or power for life changing appliances.

It is the later that was the real goal all along. It was the desire of some folks to make sure the DNA expression of the human body was altered to such a degree that true expression through it would be impossible. Naive scientists gleefully aided in the demise of the human body and those who objected were either whacked or had to find another job. And while I'm sure you are sincere in your notion that you are making it safe, I point you to the fiascos that are Hanford, San Onofre, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and of course my best friend Fukashima, as proof that you are failing in such a way that if you were an NFL quarterback you would have been working at Pizza Hut after Three Mile Island alone.

See Peachbottom . Then seek out as much material on how the DNA in the human body is altered by exposure to the waste waste products from this glorious system. You might try the easy stuff like the DU problems, and ask how you'd work with such interesting birth defects. But that's the easy stuff, really dig deep to find how your Soul Expression here is screwed up by radiation

I think pressure needs to be brought upon governments worldwide to focus their collective attention on Fukushima, in every respect.

Some of the other important issues that preoccupy the world seem like "national personality quirks" or "matters of opinion" when compared to the compelling character of the issues presented by Fukushima. Fukushima needs to become the focus of constructive international attention. It's problems need to be solved. The Japanese may be too close to the problem to see it clearly in pragmatic terms. They need help.

Beyond Fukushima, there should be an enforced retrofit of all nuclear reactors with much more sophisticated containment structures designed to facilitate the "decanting" of molten nuclear fuel. In my mind these units would be more along the line of the domes of orange juice squeezers that channel the fuel into manageable rivulets that could be collected and removed from the site. There are refractory materials that can contain molten fuel in order for it to be transported to safer storage.

This sort of thing needs to be done wherever possible. Where it is impossible, the reactors should be shut down and mothballed.

Research in nuclear chemistry should be upped in priority around the globe and declared a matter of "transnational security", beyond any petty restrictions of national political interest or corporate proprietorial interest. All the research should be pooled in order to find a way to master the hazards of radioactivity and even the phenomenon of radioactive decay itself, completely.

I'm not against nuclear power but the situation we are currently in is analogous to using fire in all of our homes without the knowledge of how to put fires out.
