Object is reflecting visible spectrum light and is persistent not a transient error on the instrument. (Cosmic Ray Impacts for instance)

object clears view at 15:50
2013/06/17
Observatory: STEREO-B
Instrument: SECCHI
Detector: COR-1
Measurement: white light
URL: helioviewer.org...

Observations: Object appears to be consistent with a gas giant showing concentric rings and showing a hexagonal pattern similar to Saturn's found at the pole facing the visible light instrument on the STEREO-B satellite observatory. Below is a link to a screen capture from the helioviewer interface. This frame shows the hexagonal pattern clearly

Video showing the object coming into view: helioviewer.org...

Video Closeup showing object coming into view: helioviewer.org...

Current video from helioviewer showing the object is still in the image. helioviewer.org...

I am just really puzzled at what is making this image on the STEREO-B camera. Is the imager damaged perhaps? I have seen the beforitsnews site but there is more conjecture than facts on that site. Any people with some observation experience know what this object is? Thanks for viewing the thread and I hope someone has some facts that can explain this. I have seen no reporting on this other than fringe sites. I would like to have some reasoned debate without the hyperbole.

That has been my reaction exactly. It can be seen coming into view but then it seems to kind of hang around in the same area for weeks now. You can clearly see solar plasma shooting between the object and the camera so what ever it is it is a large artifact in the imager or it is a large spherical object image that just kind of appeared next to the Sun and is not moving very fast. I have watched Mercury transits and they happen pretty quickly they do not sit around like this object has since it first appeared on about the 16-17th of June. Still scratching my head on this one.

What the hell is it? There is at least 4 of them

So there is a giant object visible in satellite images but all the scientific experts working on the project are keeping quiet and allowing armchair laymen to be the first to announce the discovery?

A video about it, not believing the ufo title but an interesting video all the same, don't know if embedding is right because I am on my phone

IMO it dosn't look like an object popping up at the sun, more like something on the lens.

This isn't the first time we see this, and everytime it looks more camera related than a solid object.

This grainy video makes me wonder if this is some damage to the camera perhaps. I hope not because this STEREO satellite is just a remarkable device. It would be a shame if it is damaged. Space is a hostile environment for cameras and every other complex bit of machinery.

looks fake man.. Not trying to be a drive by skeptic, but looks like a artifact or something.. if it like had intelligent movement then you mighta been onto something...

I mean thanks for sharing but I have seen hundreds of if not thousands of things like this on ats.. its just inconclusive bud..

I hope they aren't star destroyers.

That might suck.

I am leanig that way as well but the video does show a CME moving between the object and the satellite camera.

stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov...
take a look at the images under cosmic rays and debris

Think thats a trick to the eye, as the thing is out of focus very close to the lens, so it looks like the CME passing infront, as it's pretty much turns transparent.

I wish I had five dollars for every internet post I've seen with the likes of "OMG look what I found on SOHO!"

Thanks for the link. You can see this type of artifact in the movie they linked: stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov...

It is the same type of artifacts in the image in this movie from 2009. Mystery solved. Thanks. I just hope their is no damage to the sensor. That would suck. A great instrument.

5 dollars? For each post? Now you are just getting greedy. Bill Gates would be envious.

Figuring out what it is is better than not knowing.

No one is forcing you to read threads you don't want to read.

After some review, I believe this anomaly is an optical effect of the instruments that may repeat periodically to varying degrees depending on conditions.

For example, a brief search back through 2012 revealed a similar effect to a lesser degree around 3/15/12 near 04:00:00.

Here is an image from 3/15/12, where the effect is much less noticeable but in the same region as the recent anomaly:

When the contrast of the screen capture is increased, it reveals the same "rings" in the same region:

Just for clarity of my speculation:

I cannot say with 100% certainty that this is the same effect, but it looks similar and in all probability is the culprit. It most likely increases under certain solar conditions. If one were to search through the vast amount of imagery available, perhaps other more pronounced examples could be found.

Looks awesome. These critters seem organic and completely oblivious to us as any fish in the sea. The size of these critters is a bit intimidating.
