Turks Declare Star Wars on Lego

The Turkish Cultural Community organisation in Austria has called for Lego to be boycotted after accusing its products of encouraging racial hatred and prejudice.

They claim that the Jabba the Hut set is modeled on "a holy Muslim temple and it is sacrilege to include a machine gun inside or to populate it with criminals".

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul

The Offending Lego Set

Jami al-Kabir in Beirut

Dr. Melissa Günes, General Secretary of the Turkish Cultural Community, confirmed that Lego had been contacted with an official complaint and that the toy store had been forced to swap the offending building blocks that the organisation claimed in fact insulted Muslims because they were in reality copies of a mosque and a minaret.

The allegations include the fact that a watchtower and model of Jabba the Hut's palace are in fact exact replicas of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the mosque Jami al-Kabir in Beirut - and of a minaret.

The organisation adds that Jabba’s palace in Star Wars is populated by (pseudo-Buddhist) monks, the terrorist Jabba the Hut loves to smoke water pipes and have his victims executed, and concludes that: "It is apparent that, for the figure of the repulsive bad guy Jabba and the whole scenery, racial prejudices and hidden suggestions against Orientals and Asians were used as deceitful and criminal personalities (slaveholders, leaders of criminal organizations, terrorists, criminals, murderers, human sacrifice).

They also complain about the "Shocking red and black devil’s scowl at the top of the box packaging on the right, which is at least an obvious signal that the toy should not lie under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve" - a reference to a picture of the Star Wars Sith Darth Maul, the disciple of Sith Lord Dark Sidous.

It also continues that the "rockets, cannons, weapons like laser pistols, guns and Samurai swords (serve as feet of the B’omarr monk) and trap doors in the LEGO fortress buildings are pedagogically questionable. The combination of temple building and bunker facilities where shots are fired cannot be appropriate for children between 9 and 14 years old, most of all with respect to a peaceful cohabitation of differing cultures in Europe."

Austrian Times

I'm genuinely surprised by this.

Usually it is the painfully politically correct who take it upon themselves to be offended for others.

In this case, it is the Turkish Cultural Community organisation in Austria that has decided to be offended by a Jabba the Hut model that resembles a Mosque. Considering that Star Wars came out in 1977, what I find puzzling is that it has taken them 35 years to be offended?

LMAO

I hope your somehow hiding your IP

I think I actually hate religious nuts.

Here in Malaysia one state has actually banned women from singing and dancing in public, for awhile there it was even illegal to get a hair cut from a member of the opposite sex!!!!!!!!!

I genuinely believe god would be happier if god botherers of all creeds just dropped dead, be a hell of a lot less stress and strife in the world for certain

Pathetic.

The Hagia Sophia in Turkey hasn't even been a mosque since 1931.

The really ironic thing is that before that it was a Christian cathedral for a 1,000 years before the Muslims built a mosque on top of it after conquering the Orthodox Christian Eastern Roman Empire's capital of Byzantium (Istanbul) in 1453.

Don't draw the prophet. Don't drop the Qur'an. Don't name a teddy bear after a name that was given to the Prophet. Don't talk about them. Leave Brittany alone. Don't address perceived oppression.

And don't draw their buildings.

But don't worry. As long as you obey the rules, don't worry.

Don't know if I should cry or laugh about that.

Many mosques look like a flying saucer sitting on a blockhouse with long range missiles around it. How much more infantile can idiots get.

Seriously, is there an regressive infantile gene at work in the world right now. Between stuff like this and the infantile regression of US schools one has to ask the question.

It's sacrilegious to depict a machine gun inside what their over-sensitive perceptions see as a Mosque? Are they joking or what?!

I don't recall hearing squat out of Turkey when the Mosques in Iraq were being used as weapons depots by AQ in Iraq and other insurgent groups. Not one peep. Oh, but a lego toy set pisses them off? Talk about WARPED priorities. Just unbelievable sometimes.

And as much as peop like to think it, religious nuts are not just within the confines of Islam, they're all over.

I was watching Part 2 of Louis Theroux's documentary last night, about the Westbro Baptist Church in America, and these vile people are the exact same as these radical islamists. I was shaking my head all the way through it thinking "how can you be so brainwashed"

Madness.

And if that picture I posted above offended anybody - Log off the internet and get back to your cave

With respect on this, how can anyone compare the Westboro nutcases to anything like Religion in the conventional sense? If you've seen something showing detail about those kooks, then you know it's nothing like a Church. It's literally an incestuous family ..blood family (for the most part) who simply abused the laws and tax code in this nation to hide under the cover of calling their little hate group a 'Church'.

If we want to really look to examples, I'd look more to one like The Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord for representing the true lunatic fringe America certainly does have among the Christian community.

That still doesn't make the pic any less..... inappropriate? That's how I'd put it. I mean, it's as 'harmless' as the Crucifix in Urine someone called art. Sure..private showing to people who like that sort of filth, may be artsy. It DEEPLY offended a large % of this nation though......as I'd imagine that could for another people?

Lego is very strong and cheap to make.

Scale the bricks up a bit, and in the future, every mosque will be made of Lego.

If Allah wills it.

It sounds more like a "look I found something else I can bitch about with regards to the West" type issue.

I named my new pot-bellied pig pet "Mohamad". Do you think that I should change the name?

I mean really, there is no way that those two structures even look alike. Just another reason to hate the good ol' U.S. of A..

Dont worry about it, they shouldnt give so much fodder for people to sit back and say "really WTH" to

People can say what they want about all those christians out there........but if people are actually intellectually honest and not trying to be politically correct, or placate.........

There is NO comparison in the overreaction and over reaching done between the two.......
