This video, released by Parks Canada, shows a 24-hour time lapse cycle of a cougar eating a freshly-killed elk. I think it's an amazing bit of footage; the cat eats most of the elk over 24 hours, then leaves the remainders for the scavengers to clean up. After gorging itself, the cougar buries the food, lounges around, has a nap or two, then eats again.

I'm so glad that we still have forest areas for creatures like this to live, and I'm even happier that technology allows me to see things like this.

Well done edit for a single camera angle. Fun to watch

Nice to see that cougar doing well.

Aww how cute!

Now just imagine it eating a ski/snowboarder...
music isn't so cute now is it?

I've always been confused to why people have so much love for animals that will kill/eat you alive with their faces.

Things are getting very strange with all the video around now. Makes you wonder what we will see next. If there really is such a thing as bigfoot it shouldn't be long before we find out about it... The same is true of creatures said to be in large bodies of water.

I live in Boise, Idaho, and we have had quite a bit of contact with cougars this year. They have been coming down into Boise out of the foothills to hunt along the Boise River. Mostly to raid uncovered dumpsters and garbage cans. But several have been shot because they were deemed too big a risk to let live or relocate. They don't like to attempt to dart them because they say it is to dangerous if the animal doesn't go down right away. There are a lot of misconceptions about cougars. For instance they are not considered to be a big cat like tigers or lions. They are actually considered to be a small cat like bobcats, linx and household cats. In fact, besides overzealous hunters, one of the bigger dangers to cougars is feline leukemia they can contract from house cats. It can be fatal to them. They require a large area to hunt in and tend to follow prey into lower areas along waterways during the winter.

From time to time I see posts on ATS that are just so stupid I cant resist.
I think it was the face part the really made me laugh. Maybe animals should just become vegetarians.

Or maybe instead of loving life we should just kill anything that eats meat.

Nah. Still cute.

Why do humans get special treatment that it wouldn't be?

It confuses me why you don't see the irony of your post.

The irony in my post, because I'm:

1: Being facetious
2: Pointing out that we are too animals in the end.
[snipped for manners]

Not to mention we get to look at the incredibly simplistic natural life here. Eat, sleep, eat, sleep some more... etc. Cougar doesn't care that a half-black socialist marxist muslim is president. Cougar doesn't care that Israel and Palestine are killing each other; he's just enjoying some elk and lounging under a tree.

Imagine if the cougar was eating Hitler or Saddam Hussein or some other sleaze ball. Eating people doesn't have to be a bad thing...

Um, because humans are animals and we have the ability to enjoy other species. It's called nature. We share the planet with all the other living beings out there.

Are you suggesting we not have so much love for them simply because they're capable of harming us? That strikes me as a much more confusing notion

Attacks on humans aren't that common.. in all of the US and Canada there's an average of about 6 attacks per year and most of them aren't fatal ... they tend to avoid people.... Chihuahuas on the other hand are vicious!

mineralwellsindex.com...

Shortly after spotting the dog, she said, McFarland realized several other dogs were in pursuit of her.

“She said she got past the dog and all of a sudden there were four or five of them,” Johnson said. “They were chihuahuas and they attacked her.”

Very cool stuff. I like how they sync'd up the little stabs in the music to the still shots. Classy haha.

I lived in Banff for about 9 months and absolutely loved it. Never saw a cougar but I was lucky to see a wolf once while I was driving on the icefield parkway.

Such a beautiful place. Hope to go back there again soon!

I like the shot when he is roaring, mouth wide to the air. And interesting that he seldom leaves the kill, eats at night, and lays right next to it all day. He is guarding it, and though I have not feared cougars walking upon me in the woods, I would not want to stumble upon this cat that day.

Very awesome video!! It is refreshing to see something that is not full of doom and gloom once and a while. That cat certainly looked like it was enjoying itself just hanging out and grubbing down. Thanks!!

Not to mention the fact we kill/eat animals all the time... with our faces.

No wonder all the other animals don't love us! Haha.

Because we don't own this planet. We just share it.
