DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, has made public its best guess about what might have caused its unmanned arrowhead-shaped Hypersonic Technology Vehicle (HTV-2) to suddenly lose contact and crash in the Pacific just a few minutes after slicing through the sky at Mach 20 last August: it was going so fast its skin peeled off.

Sounds like it would have been a fun ride, until the skin peeled off the aircraft. I didn't even know this could happen. This aircraft peeled like a banana at mach 20.

I'm just curious as to what Mach 20, 1000MPH per Mach right?

I hope I can get tickets on the next flight, seems fun.

Okay got it, 21,000MPH, 20X the speed of sound, crazy

just read about this on abc site. mach 20! funny even saying that. can you imagine an offensive weapon with such a delivery rate?

Its 761mph...the speed of sound

if that is what they admit to flying
imagine how far beyond that they really are..kind of scary
probably means most ufo are in fact tech that we will never know even existed

Well I guess that information these days...., nobody's really correct but close enough for me, I'm not a scientist, but..... 700 whatever and 1000 MPH are so fkn close together to me... yeah you get my ignorance now don't you??

, thanks for your input friend!

And a STAR for correcting my mistake!

20 times the speed of sound, that is fast might explain some of them noises you have been hearing over there

i have a theory of what caused the crash: going mach 20.

Yeah it's fast, i didn't think anything short of rockets carrying shuttles could do that speed. Good thing it was unmanned, anyone riding in that thing would have been torn apart by the wind.

No and i don't want to imagine it. 20k mph you can almost fly around the world in an hour. Go in and bomb Iran and be gone long before the bombs hit the ground.

mach 20 = 15 224.141 mph

google. Works wonders.

Shuttle = 17,500MPH

This thing = 15,360MPH

Getting into space might soon become easier........

Good you said that, because I wanted to be ignorant and say that once I heard that it takes the space shuttle 25,000MPH to leave the earths atmosphere

Anyone know what it looks like? I'd like to see what kind of aerospace design can go mach 20. I remember reading somewhere how designing planes, it's a trade off between between speed and stability. The higher speed a craft can achieve the less stable the craft will be at lower speeds.

Interesting how the skin peeled off of it though. Do you think we have reached the limits in materials or design?

As there doesn't seem to be any photos or REAL artists impressions, I have knocked up something which I believe may look visually similar:

Altitude plays a big part too.

There is a huge difference between doing that sort of speed at 100,000ft compared to say, at sea level. In space, it doesn't really matter how fast you are going at all.

Thank you for the added info friend, would not have thought of that because of my lack in that type of field in science.
I guess I forgot my science class projects of inertia, momentum, height, speed, etc...LOL

But in the construction trade, forgetta bout it!

Again thx, S
