SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Springfield that exists in the mind of Matt Groening is a kind of American everything — hick pit stop, rosy-cheeked Rockwellian font of family values, cesspool of corruption, ethnic melting pot, boomtown gone to rust.
The real Springfield is a western Oregon town of about 60,000 people. Its quiet Main Street is struggling in the face of a recession while the highway-based chain stores and restaurants survive or thrive. Its median income is just under $40,000 and nearly 20 per cent of people of all ages live under the poverty line.
There are 35 states containing a Springfield. A Springfield can be found in 35 different states—at least four in Wisconsin, and no fewer than nine Springfield Townships in Pennsylvania. On the other hand, database studies suggest that there are many more common place-names, including Fairview, Midway and Oak Grove. Accounting for all the place-names in the United States is made difficult by database ambiguities, but the reality seems to be that the popularity of "Springfield" relative to other names is more legend than fact.

It's been said (by Bruce Townley, among others) that every state in the USA has a Springfield. This isn't true; 35 states have a Springfield or a close cousin; but the following states are Springfield-deficient: Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota*, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, Wyoming. *North Dakota does have a Springfield Township, but it's mostly an empty spot on the map.

Ahhh Yes..... Now I can die a happy man with the feeling of a complete life. I've lived to see the Titanic located and the hometown of the Simpson's confirmed. There is nothing left to wonder about.
Seriously...my Springfield tried our best to lobby and win the competition when the movie came out.. Alas... We weren't Springfield enough for Bart and Co.

Im not covinced. I remember Homer going to New York. He used the toilet in the Twin Towers.
But in an earlier episode he takes a job as a mascot for the Capital City baseball team.
Capital City and New York seem to be two different places in the Simpson Universe
The episode refers to the long-running joke of Springfield's unknown and unidentifiable location. The original version of Forbes' line at the end, "The future looks brighter than ever for this Northern Kentucky family," was changed multiple times.[2] Scully said the writers did not want to "pin it down for the fans," and with knowledge that the episode would rerun twice, had Forbes record several alternate locations, which were indeed seen on Fox reruns.[2] Each of the alternate locations, including the unused "small island of Lanai," can be found as an easter egg on the eleventh season DVD set.
