Thread title from linked article.

Just when I think nothing is really that surprising anymore...

With the actual, sunken, Titanic being in the news, along with the re-release of the film in 3D, it seems that some people just came to the realization that the RMS Titanic was in fact, a real ship.

So, as seen below, some took to Twitter to express their surprise.

I don’t know whether to laugh, or shake my head in sadness.

It seems lately that the masses believe the fiction while seeing the facts as fantasy.

What in the world is going on?

Our children no longer feel compelled to study history because... well, you and I are no longer young enough to know everything!

This is 1984 - stupidity is knowledge - ignorance is truth.

Sad and funny at the same time. Nice find.

Is it excusable that it is mostly young people and it happened 100 years ago? I'm on the fence.

This is failure on so many levels. I'm part of this younger generation, I remember being taught this in school. Where were all these people?

I absolutely agree with you! The trash that is being taught to children in state-run schools these days would have made the parents of fifty years ago feel physically sick!

In the UK the dumbing down of the curriculum has been disguised: the government have been saying for years that they need to emphasise 'skills' rather than 'knowledge' since that is what employers want! What a load of BS!!

We are seeing the dumbing down of the population on a massive scale! Too many stupid parents raising even more stupid children.

Look at this thread. You people are far too self righteous.

Also, it is clearly obvious most were joking.

"OMG the titanic was real???" Seriously, cant you guys understand sarcasm?

Some of those comments may have been from people who have not had an education,or from distant lands where they do not teach about the Titanic.

I actually know someone who was told at school in the far east, that dinosaur bones were forged and buried "a hundred years ago"by our ancestors,to trick us in the future.

True story...and you should have sen his face when I tried to explain what he was looking at when I showed him the Hubble ultra deep field image..

Its all about what you are taught..

ha ha ha ! that IS funnyyyyyyyyy!!!

i knew a girl, who, when was boiling water for pasta, i told her to put some salt in the water to make the water boil faster.
to my surprise, she came back with ' oh thats just an old wives tale'!!!!!
i was speechless! as i picked up my jaw from the floor and shook my head at the impossible stupidity of this comment,a i asked her if she ever took science in school! i told her it reduces the boiling state of water.
she still didnt believe me,so i had to bring her out side in the winter and put some table salt on a patch of ice.
as she watched the salt slowly melt the ice,she said 'oh, in ever really knew that'!!!

any way i felt like a 4th grade science teacher with a 35 year old adult!

a lot of people are dumb and or ignorant. get use to it!!!

I wouldn't be so sure about that if I were you.
I've come across a few dimwits myself.

It's sad, but not surprising. We live in a cultural society, not just here in the U.S, but worldwide, that abhors reading. It almost amazes me that so many people take the time to even read the short blurbs posted on facebook or ATS. Of course, you must remember, that this is coming from someone who has lived 60 percent of their life with their nose in a book. LOL.

Also remember, there have been experiments conducted where they have taken pictures of well-known politicians and shown them to random people, and people didn't even know who they were!!! The most common answer is, "Oh, isn't he/she a singer," or "Oh, isn't he/she an actor /actress?" It's ridiculous, but true.

The most famous shipwreck of all time and they didn't know it was real! I could understand if it was some less famous shipwreck like the Edmund Fitzgerald... but the Titanic? Someone better tell them that even though the shipwreck was real the movie is made-up. Leonardo was not really on the ship!

I know leonardo is real but the titanic is too? Does that mean he died too?... haha

The exact reason why I use ATS for all my social and internet news. Nothing suprises me anymore when it comes to the average person's intelligence. Talk about not having a clue about reality. But then again there is a thread going around ATS claming wizards and hogwarts(sp) is real.

Anyone remember the "Avatar blues" fiasco? Guess this is what you get in a society with a failing education system and everyone is doped up on prozac and/or drunk.

Oh for goodness sakes. I wouldn't have believed it if you hadn't shown that capture. I know we have teenagers and 20 somethings that lack the intelligence God gave the common goose, but THIS one takes the cake., no question. Heck.. It comes back for seconds and eats someone else's cake at the same time!

You know.. there are some moments in life where something is learned for the first time and the knowledge is SO overdue and self evident, one just doesn't TELL ANYONE it came as a news flash. This would rank #1 on the list. If you JUST LEARNED The RMS Titanic was a real ship and not just a Hollywood creation for a cool movie..umm.. wow.. ya really want to tell the entire world? LOL........

Ignorance Denied is a beautiful thing to see. The level of ignorance requiring a solution is scary.

Unfortunately, it's not just "stupid" youth anymore. Stupiditity is almost pandemical in this world. Sad state of affairs.

Err... Well, actually.. You only know what you're told AND what you choose to put the effort into learning...

It's that SECOND part no one seems to bother with anymore and if we're relying on a public school education to take the place of personal curiosity and learning for the sheer joy of learning..then we are doomed and maybe we deserve to be at this point in history.
