I just had a big argument with my family over Ron Paul. My uncle (a liberal Obama supporter) and my dad (liberal also) both thought that he was an anti-semitic. They brought up some good points about the newsletters that I admit, were good points. We're all Jewish, so they feel like he wouldn't be a good candidate because they think he's anti-semitic. But I wanted to post on here to see if any of you have any good rebuttals.

ron paul approving a news letter is nothing.

the majority of these candidates don't even know the content of the commercials they run.

you know, the ones that say "this is mitt romney, and i approve this message."

they just don't have the time to go over every single thing. they have to be on the road, travelling, meeting people, preparing for debates and speeches etc.

I think Americans are brainwashed to think that not supporting the Israeli state means that one is anti-semitic. If I say anymore, I may grow angry.

1. If he is against Israel, why does he defend Israel's right to defend themselves without any interference from the U.S.?

2. If Ron Paul is "like Hitler", why does he NOT want to attack other Countries and nation build?

3. What Newsletters? You mean these?

I know! Saying we should leave Israel alone to do their own thing (which is what Ron Paul is saying) has become anti-semitic!

HA!! Your family is absolutely charming!
I felt like pulling up chair and chiming in.

Your Dad, Howard is great, loved him. I say Howard for President 2012!

Starred & Flagged!

Have fun, I hope they don't flame you lovely family too much!

You make a really good point.

People expect Ron Paul to know the content of every single newsletter written over a 20 year span with no less than 240 editions (of which 9 are considered "racist"), but yet the current Candidates don't even know the content of Ads they are running today?

I don't mean to be insensitive or rude, but this video is clearly an example of how truly clueless the average American voter is. I say this with a heavy heart - When we're dealing with this as an example of the average American voter, Ron Paul has no hope. The Mainstream media has indoctrinated your relatives (and millions of others) to the point they need deprogramming to think for themselves. Just because someone said the newsletter was approved by Paul doesn't necessarily make it true. Good luck trying to sway them, I think you'll need it.

Those crazy newsletters that're oh so racist... The majority of the "racist" statements said were true! It's like with his stance on benefits for AIDS sufferers. He says AIDS is a result of lifestyle choices they have made, and people get all offended, but it's a true fact in 99% of the cases! The thing about Ron Paul is that he speaks truth while others like Romney and Newt "Lets go to the Moon, wooo!" Gingrich say what he thinks you might want to hear... And sometimes the truth hurts and that's why Ron Paul's stances aren't always well received.

Sure some of the things your family said are right, like our involvement in Libya was actually well handled by Obama - He pressured counties like France to pitch in a large amount of the effort there, and yes this country needs growth - but along side the need of growth you have to cut spending... You got to do whatever it takes to get out of the negative, and no amount of growth could counter the rate at which our debt is building. When's the next debt ceiling increase I wonder?

If Ron Paul recognizing that Israel is not a state within the United States makes him antisemitic than so be it, so am I. We've done enough for Israel.

Well I totally agree with Howard and support a more left, socialist remedy. Growth and expansion 1st, not austerity. Preserve social programs like Social Security, and enact laws to keep the thieving politicians hands out of our SS like it's their own personal slush fund.

Take health care responsibility away from the employers and have a single payer health care system. If a tax was imposed to pay for it, so be it. HMOs are super expensive, I think most Americans would pay less in an added tax than they are currently paying for premiums.

This is why I can't support RP for president, but I did register Republican this year so I could vote for him in the primary. I want to scatter the votes. Hehe.

-Ron Paul did not write the racist remarks. Ask your family, if they run a business, how they would feel if they were called anti semitic because one of their employees was anti semitic. That individual is no longer associated with ron paul and is basically a no one. Its guilt by association, nothing different.

-He is the only candidate for Israel! He would give them sovereignty without interferring with their policy. If your parents are still not convinced, assuming Israel needs America, tel them Ron Paul says Benjamin Netanyahu himself said Israel can handle Iran. Israel also has nukes, they dont need Americas interference and war mongering. Only President Paul can smooth things over with Iran, they speak highly of him on presstv, Iranian news, thereby eliminating any Iranian threat to Israel.

- "he's like hitler." Everyone is compared to Hitler. Bush jr. was compared to Hitler while calling Saddam hitler, and now ron paul is like hitler for not stopping ahmadenijad who is also like hitler. Can we give the Hitlerisms a rest? When so many are like Hitler it loses all meaning. Ron Pauls main philosophy is Austrian economics written and championed by many great Jews. Not much of an anti semite if he loves a philosophy created by a jew.

-Romney is not a conservative. Real conservatives dont vote to increase debt or spend trillions on pointless wars or sacrifice liberty for security. What is so conservative about that? Ron Pauls record shows he is a consistent conservative, "the taxpayers best friend."

Ron Paul 2012

I agree this is an example of the average voter. Knowing this, does it not become our responsibility to be able to educate them?

No offense to the OP, but he doesn't put up much of fight to the points of his Uncle and Dad. Just look at the rebuttal to the newsletters point, "But still"
The OP concedes the point as if it were true and tried to move on to a new point. Instead that is the time to point out the facts that are known about the newsletters. Look at the discussion of Romney. Uncle Howard claims Romney is a Conservative but then goes on to give example after example of things that prove Romney is not a Conservative. Instead of the OP pointing out this obvious contradiction, he remains silent. Again conceding the point as if it were fact.

For the OP. I think it is great that you have the type of family that would gather around like this and have such a discussion. You call this arguing... I call this a nice conversation. If you would like to see a real family argument, you should come with me to my Mother's home sometime. My family does not discuss a lot, we argue. Although I disagree with your Uncle Howard, he seems like a nice man. That is just the kind of guy you can sit down with, have a cup of coffee and discuss just about anything. I grew up without family and from where I sit, you are truly blessed.

Haha I gotcha. I'm just a terrible debater. Usually I'm good debating on sites like ATS where I can think out my answer but in a situation like this, I often come out blank.

Also remember to bring up some positives so the conversation is not stuck on an irrelevant issue like the newsletter.

-Ron Paul will bring ALL the troops home.
-Ron Paul will eliminate the income tax.
-Ron Paul will put the dollar back on a gold standard
-Ron Paul would end corporate bailouts to billionaires.

Ask them simple questions. "did you know the dollar is not based on anything? Ron Paul will change this."
"Like paying income tax? Ron Paul thinks income tax is unamerican."

Here's some of the things that were said: -Ron Paul approved the newsletters therefore is anti-semitic and racist -He's against Israel -He's like Hitler -Romney is a conservative

It is difficult to bring people up to speed when they are so far behind the curve. I mean, this is so pathetic, while not at all unusual.
You cannot win these arguments if your loved ones don't want to listen to the points you make. I mean, it looks like they were throwing all of this stuff out that they had been programmed to believe.

First, I would ask if the meaning of "anti-semitic" is "anyone that is not pro-semitic".
Second, as for the "racist" bit, I think I would attempt to compare the actions of Ron Paul to the actions of your own family. Not words, but ACTION. There are youtube videos of black people that relate first hand how Ron Paul has helped them.
Third, exactly HOW is he against Israel. Make them elaborate, but counter with FACTS.
Fourth, please make them explain the meaning of CONSERVATIVE with notable examples of great conservatives. This is a bit tough, because the meaning has been hijacked by the neocons. For example, ask them if a conservative HAS to believe in these foreign wars. Is that the meaning of conservative? Or, does a conservative HAVE to be a religious person? Is that the meaning? What is it exactly?
Then, be ready to hammer them with the truth about Romney and Romneycare for example. Also, there are plenty of youtube videos of the regular people he has screwed.

One of the best ways to get people to begin to understand the truth is to show how the candidates represent big corporations, and not the people. With Opensecrets.org, it is relatively easy. With this same tool, you can show how the military is SOLIDLY behind Ron Paul, and how little money he gets from big corp. If they don't understand that these other candidates are solidly in the pocket of big corporations, you have some work to do.

Good luck with that.I have the same problem with my family and were Christan."You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inert, so hopelessly dependent on the system that they will fight to protect it."Quote from the Matrix. The older generation have been fed so much propaganda by the msm that some of them will never wake up.When I talk to my father about Dr Ron Paul he parrots Fox News and says he is unelectable.lol.What can you do but to keep at it.

Sorry but I couldn't listen to it all. I have no idea how old your dad is. However he is old enough that he thinks he knows everything when it's clear that he doesn't. The other thing you are dealing with is party line. Your dad will vote party over common sense and spew false facts. For what he thinks is a convincing argument even when they are wrong. They are living in denial because if they actually did a reality check it would turn their entire world upside down. This isn't entirely about age as so many people want to blame it on. It is about fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of being wrong.
