I am tired of what seems like 20 million Ron Paul threads or Obama. I think that I need a little break from it maybe other people feel the same. So I am asking who you think is the best guitarist and why.

I would have to say John Petrucci of Dream Theater. He can play any style and in any bizarre time signatures. To knock out a 40 minute song on a 3 hour set and not miss or blow a beat.

His students included Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of Counting Crows, Kevin Cadogan from Third Eye Blind, Larry LaLonde of Primus / Possessed, Alex Skolnick of Testament, Rick Hunolt (ex-Exodus), Phil Kettner of Lääz Rockit, Geoff Tyson of T-Ride, Charlie Hunter and David Turin.

Yup, Joe Satriani.

Hello,
I had to sign up to reply to this. Though I have yet to author an introduction. That being said, for my money, Stevie Ray Vaughan is the most masterful guitarist I have ever heard or seen. Just my two cents.
Cheers

So many good players out there, so many different styles.

My favorites:
Jimi Hendrix
Pat Methany
Scott Henderson
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Eddie Van Halen

In my opinion being a 'shred-head' doesn't mean somebody is a great player, all of the above mentioned have not only been guitar masters but also have been great innovators.

Perhaps not the best but really awesome and original - Chris Cheney from The Living End!

Oh man there are so many great one's you can't just pick one. But I'll throw a few out there who came to mind that I respect (in no particular order).

Allan Holdsworth
Ray Gomez (check out the album Volume)
John Scofield
The Reverend Billy Gibbons
Duke Robilliard
Robben Ford
Mike Stern

And I think you can guess who tops the list as my all time favorite.
