The giant orb of iron and nickel that anchors Earth's center is spinning faster than the planet's surface, according to a new study that confirms scientists' expectations.
The finding is based on analyses of earthquake pairs that occur at roughly the same spot on Earth but at different times.
On seismic recoding instruments, the earthquake signatures from waveform doublets, as they are called, look nearly identical.
When earthquakes strike, their seismic waves can travel through the planet and surface all over the globe. The researchers analyzed 18 sets of waveform doublets -- some separated in time by up to 35 years -- from earthquakes occurring off the coast of South America but which were recorded at seismic stations near Alaska.

So....sooo....SAD! That place is still cracka lackin too.

I see Missouri finally had an aftershock. folkworm.ceri.memphis.edu... is showing a 2.4 just a few minutes ago. Makes me feel better for the area involved not to mention my area as well.

I hope that Mother Earth is healed soon...

Yeah I was wondering if that was the same one you had mentioned earlier. You see anything else as of late? I am wondering if the ground is still noisy??

I've seen at least 50 tiny spikes up to 10+/- microns/sec, but they don't have the "classic" quake shape like the one I posted earlier. Could be traffic noise, or nearby construction.
Someone that watches the area often in GEE (or even fancier software ) would be better able to tell you if the area "looks noisy".

That photo still gets me.
My adrenalin levels are high today, for no other reason than memory. It's odd. Feel quite numb. It's still pretty raw.

On the way to work I saw many road cones decorated with flowers. It was an oddly beautiful and poignant sight and touched a nerve. I had a weepy eye or two...damned hayfever!

You may rest assured that the 188 day theory is pure conjecture. There is no rhyme or reason behind it, unless you ignore the earthquakes in between!

I think I already posted the image here, but here it is on my blog while I go and find the post. Note that another blogger Bill Foster also looked at this and cam to the same conclusions - completely independently by the way.

Have there been any smaller aftershocks near the Misourri epicenter yet? My fingers are crossed that you say yes, as my minuscule understanding is that the 4 could be a foreshock, would rather it be an aftershock of course. Thanks for helping us to understand all this,

With eight active distilleries on the island and a ninth being readied for production around 2008, so probably in production, I guess anything. It is probably the islanders bumping into each other.

Ye have me going now. In my pitifully out of date database I don't find any quakes for ISLAY. Mind it only goes back to 1382. Curious indeed. More investigation and more drams needed.



I had not realised it is on the fault line of the Great Glen. That probably explains it.

This study suggests that all the quakes in the NMSZ are aftershocks of earlier larger ones.

This artlicle reports on that study.

In the study, Mian and Seth Stein of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., show that earthquakes in continental interiors, such as the Mississippi's New Madrid seismic zone hit by 1811 and 1812 major quakes, unleash aftershocks centuries to millennia later. Rather than pointing to risks of future major quakes on those spots as they would on the edge of a continent, these events are simply the slow settling of continental crust.

Horizontal Earthquake

I'm not so sure that every time the New Madrid Fault has a quake that it is an aftershock to the quake of 1812....
